Your advice to the client is plain. Spot what others miss. Every project you work on is a chance to find the next opportunity, a further mitigation step, a structure that would suit another shareholder, a risk that hasn’t been addressed. You implement what’s agreed and keep looking for what’s next. Be the quality gate.

You review the work of Tax Advisers and Junior Tax Advisers, steps plans, tax analysis and HMRC clearance applications making sure every project holds up to HMRC scrutiny and delivers the best outcome for the client. Deliver on time and on budget. You manage your projects to internal and statutory deadlines and to budget, handling sensitive personal and financial information with complete confidentiality.

Develop the team. You coach and mentor Tax Advisers to build their technical depth, support junior staff with internal and external queries. Make things better. You’ll contribute ideas to improve how we work and help the firm grow its revenue and manage its costs.

Who This Role Is For

We’re less interested in your job title and more interested in how you think. This role suits two types of people:

  • You’re in practice and want more planning, less processing.
  • You’re CTA qualified (or equivalent) and technically strong, but too much of your week goes on returns and routine compliance. The work you actually enjoy is the planning — sitting down with a client, understanding what they want, and building the structure that gets them there. You want a role where that is the job.
  • You’re in a larger firm and want ownership. You’ve worked on complex personal tax and restructuring projects, but you’ve been one part of a big machine. You want to own projects from start to finish, work directly with business owners, and see the difference your advice makes. You also want to lead and develop a team, not just sit in one.

What Sets You Apart

The core skill in this role is taking complex tax legislation and turning it into a clear, practical plan that a business owner can understand and act on. Beyond that:

  • You combine rigour with judgement. You follow the firm’s checklists and processes because accuracy matters but you also know when a situation needs fresh thinking rather than a template answer.
  • You take ownership. If a project is off track or a client is unhappy, it’s your problem to fix not something to elevate or deflect.
  • You have a solutions mindset. When a client’s situation is complicated, you look for the route that works rather than the reasons it can’t.
  • Delivery of project includes effective communication with client, internally and other 3rd parties (including solicitors).
  • You can explain it at every level. From a technical review with a junior colleague to a presentation to a client, you communicate clearly and with confidence.
  • You keep learning. Tax legislation and case law move constantly. You’re keen to keep growing your knowledge, and you use the firm’s resources to research and advise on complex matters beyond the day-to-day.

What You’ll Need

  • CTA qualified or equivalent.
  • A high level of expertise in all relevant direct taxes in a transactional context, including Corporation Tax, Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Taxes, Inheritance Tax and Employment Taxes.
  • Hands-on experience of IHT planning, Trusts, Family Investment Companies and wills-based planning.
  • Experience preparing steps plans, tax analysis and HMRC clearance applications.
  • Experience reviewing the work of others and supporting their development.
  • Exposure to owner-managed businesses and the people who run them.

An Honest Note About This Role

This role asks for two things that don’t always sit together. You need the discipline to get every detail right. The legislation, the filings, the deadlines, because a mistake here costs a client real money. But you also need to sit across from a business owner, talk about their plans for the future, and give them a clear recommendation rather than a list of caveats. If you only want one half of that, this probably isn’t the role for you. If you want both, we should talk.

What We Offer

  • Specialist planning work - IHT, Trusts, Family Investment Companies and bespoke wills.
  • Ownership of projects from first plan to final filing.
  • A team to lead and develop, with a Team Manager alongside you on people management.
  • The opportunity to do genuinely meaningful work - helping business owners protect what they’ve built for the next generation.
  • Company car or car allowance option (after qualifying period in the role).
  • Free quality lunch 4 days a week.
  • 32 Days Holiday (incl. bank holidays).
  • Profit share scheme (after qualifying period in the role).
  • Medical insurance (after qualifying period in the role).
  • Reward Lunches.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A supportive and collaborative work environment.
