Position Musician in Residence at Old Swinford Hospital (OSH), a leading state boarding school.
Remuneration and Hours
Full-time fixed-term contract from 1 September 2026 to 9 July 2027. Salary: £13,751 for a full academic year, paid in eleven monthly equal instalments. Accommodation is provided free of rent and all charges. You are expected to live in the boarding house during term time (no partners allowed) and you will be entitled to all meals in the school dining room during term time. In line with current regulation, you will be offered a workplace pension through NEST where eligible.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of music within the school using your particular talents (instrumentalist, singer, composer, arranger).
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in Music Education at all levels.
- Supervise and encourage practice and other work in the Music School in the evenings (three evenings per week) and ensure security of the building at the end of the evening.
- Act as classroom instructor or assistant in Key Stage 3 and 4 lessons as instructed by the Director of Music or member of the SLT.
- Assist with teaching in classes at the direction of the Director of Music.
- Help run the extracurricular programme of musical activities, including organising rehearsals as a performer or conductor.
- Help with the administration and planning for concerts and exams.
- Take part in concerts and liaison activities with other schools.
- Support general administrative tasks within the music department as instructed by the Director of Music and/or the Music Administrator.
- Offer help, support and encouragement to students considering higher education courses and careers in music.
- Provide supervision as a residential boarding tutor.
- Assist the designated Housemaster with the routine operation of the boarding house and be responsible for the good order and discipline of the house at all times when on duty.
- Take an interest in the welfare and progress of all the students in the house and support house activities, competitions and pastoral care.
- Undertake weekday house duties at least one day per week as part of a weekly rota (including duty at 11:00 pm unless otherwise agreed).
- Supervise breakfast and supper in the dining hall during house duty week.
- Undertake weekend house duties as part of a termly rota and support the house team at key points in the school calendar.
- Provide duty cover in the house in times of staff absence on a short-term basis.
- Run co-curriculum clubs and assist with the weekend activity programme and boarding house open events.
- Assist Matrons when requested by the Deputy Headmaster and collaborate with graduates to ensure a programme of enrichment for boarders that is appropriate and engaging.
- Perform any other tasks reasonably required from time to time.
