Old Stone Vets has been caring for pets and their people since 2005, and our team has steadily grown along with our reputation for excellent care. What began as a one‑man mixed practice has steadily grown, and we now have our main surgery in Alston and two consult‑only branches in Stanhope and Allendale, right in the heart of the stunning North Pennines. It’s a fantastic spot for anyone who loves fresh air, beautiful views, and not spending half their life sitting at traffic lights. That said, we’re only about 45 minutes from Newcastle or Carlisle, so you can still enjoy the best of both worlds. Of course, rural roads can be “character building” at times, which is why we offer a monthly car cost contribution and a generous winter tyre allowance. It’s a bit of an unusual perk, but it means you can get around safely and confidently all year round, especially when the Pennines do their thing in winter.
At the beginning of July 2025, we decided to set aside our wellies and focus fully on small animals. We’re now expanding our 5‑vet team so we can continue doing the very best we can for the animals in our care. We’re always looking for ways to grow together and improve our services, whether that’s finding smarter ways of working, investing in shinier kit, or simply ensuring everyone feels supported and looked after. Because when the team’s happy, the animals get the best of us, and that’s what really matters.
Our Team includes:
- Karl: The “old man” of the practice, involved in everything from orthopaedics to unblocking drains.
- Rachel: A driving force behind our clinical standards and progression since 2007.
- Ed: Joined the team in 2019, known for his calm approach.
- Jenny: Joined in 2021, enthusiastic about all areas of the job.
- Kathryn: Brings a wealth of small animal experience, mainly working out of our Stanhope surgery.
We have a brilliant support team that keeps the wheels turning and the vets in check. Everyone gets stuck in equally here, and we support each other every step of the way — often with coffee, cakes, and a sense of humour.

Our Facilities include DR X‑ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, and an in‑house lab. There’s a genuine team focus on doing things properly, with the time, support, and encouragement to work up cases thoroughly.
The Role: We’re ideally hoping to find a vet with some experience under their belt who has completed their VetGDP. But honestly, we’re really just looking for the right person, someone genuinely enthusiastic, kind, and who loves being part of a close‑knit team.
Our full‑time rota is a 4‑day week (8.30 am – 6.30 pm). Everyone pitches in equally for consulting and operating duties. We also make sure you have set days at our branches for case continuity.
When it comes to out‑of‑hours, we have recently teamed up with a local practice to help us out, which means our weekends are now only 1:4 Saturday mornings. There are no on‑call shifts, no Sundays, or out‑of‑hours to be worked.
The Package: A salary of £40,000 - £65,000, depending on experience, and 5.6 weeks’ holiday.
