Hands-on commissioning engineer to bring smart building systems to life across data centres, healthcare estates, and critical commercial environments. BMS, AV, IT, lighting, energy — the full integrated stack, from configuration through to client handover. This role suits an engineer with strong technical depth across BMS, controls, and IP networking, who wants hands-on work with cutting-edge building automation in a team that takes engineering standards seriously.
About OKTO
OKTO is a systems integration company with a 33-year heritage in critical building infrastructure. We deliver intelligent building solutions across data centres, healthcare, commercial estates, and critical environments. We are based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, with a London operation and active project work across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
The role
You will take ownership of system commissioning across our project portfolio — configuring, testing, and optimising integrated building platforms so they perform to specification on day one and stay that way. You'll commission across BMS, AV, IT, lighting control, energy management, and integrated smart technologies; validate interoperability across protocols; troubleshoot at hardware, software, and network layers; and produce the commissioning evidence that lets projects close out cleanly.
Key responsibilities
- Install and commission smart building systems: BMS, AV, IT, lighting control, energy management, and integrated smart technologies
- Configure and optimise system parameters for energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and operational reliability
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across hardware, software, and network layers
- Validate interoperability between devices, platforms, and integrations (BACnet, Modbus, KNX, MQTT)
- Review engineering drawings, point schedules, and control logic to confirm correct implementation
- Support on-site installation teams with technical guidance and commissioning requirements
- Conduct functional performance tests and produce detailed commissioning reports
- Deliver system demonstrations and training to clients and facilities teams
- Collaborate with project managers, consultants, and sub-contractors
- Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with industry standards and best practice
What we are looking for
- Proven experience in building automation and smart building systems
- Strong understanding of control and electrical systems
- Working knowledge of communication protocols: BACnet/IP, Modbus, KNX, DALI, MQTT
- Familiarity with IoT platforms, cloud dashboards, and analytics tools
- Able to interpret schematics, control panel layouts, and sequence-of-operations
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Confident communicator, able to work independently or as part of a team
- Full driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites
Desirable
- Experience with Siemens, Schneider, Tridium, or similar platforms
- Knowledge of cybersecurity considerations for connected building systems
- Experience on data centres, commercial buildings, or smart campuses
Location and travel
Based from either our Lisburn (Northern Ireland) headquarters or our London operation. Regular site travel across the UK and Republic of Ireland depending on project demands. Travel, accommodation, and subsistence covered.
Compensation
Permanent: £50,000 plus benefits — company pension, private medical insurance, cycle-to-work scheme, paid volunteer time Contract alternative: 12-month fixed term at £400 per day, IR35 status to be confirmed per engagement
