Role Overview: This is a highly specialised role that sits at the intersection of traditional mechanical systems, modern IT infrastructure and data-driven automation. As a Smart Building Integration and Commissioning Specialist, you will be the technical pivot between mechanical hardware and digital intelligence. This is not a "standard BMS role"; we are looking for an experienced hands-on systems architect who can bridge the gap between HVAC, Scada, Lighting, AV, Security and enterprise IT networks. You will be responsible for the end-to-end commissioning of complex, multi-protocol integration platforms, ensuring that disparate systems communicate flawlessly to create a truly "smart digital" environment.
OKTO provides industry leading investment per employee in personal development and on-going training. We are committed to employ the best qualified and highest certified technical team in the UK. The successful applicant will enjoy £4,000.00 per annum investment in their own personal development. The successful candidate will also receive a number of employment benefits including:
- Company Pension
- Cycle to work scheme
- Paid volunteer time
- Private medical insurance
- Birthday holiday
- Free lunch Fridays
- Length of service benefit
- Cinema tickets
- Free annual eye test
Key Responsibilities:
- System Integration & Commissioning: Lead the deployment and fine-tuning of smart building platforms (e.g. Tridium Niagara, Schneider EcoStruxure, or bespoke MQTT/API-based dashboards).
- Protocol Management: Configure and troubleshoot communication across MQTT, BACnet, OPC, Modbus, DALI, KNX and M-Bus, ensuring robust data mapping and point discovery.
- Network & IT Infrastructure: Deploy and manage building networks, including IP addressing, VLAN configuration, firewall navigation, and wireless sensor integration.
- Advanced Troubleshooting: Use lateral thinking to solve complex "system-of-systems" failures where hardware, firmware and software layers intersect.
- Software Development/Scripting: Utilise basic scripting (Python, Javascript, or similar) to automate data flows or create custom logic for non-standard integrations.
- Client Consultation: Act as the technical lead on-site, explaining complex digital concepts to stakeholders and ensuring the final "user experience" of the building meets design intent.
Technical Requirements:
- Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in at least 2 major BMS/BEMS platforms and a deep understanding of Tridium Niagara (N4) or equivalent middleware.
- IT Literacy: Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, Subnetting, DNS, Cyber Security Protocols). Experience with SQL databases or API (REST/JSON) integration is a significant advantage.
- Protocol Expertise: Ability to "sniff" and analyse packets (using tools like wireshark) to diagnose communication issues between diverse hardware brands.
- Logical Mindset: A proven ability to approach problems from a first-principles perspective, identifying the root cause of issues in high-pressure environments.
Personal Attributes:
- The "Hybrid" Engineer: You are equally comfortable with a multimeter in a control panel as you are with a CLI (Command Line Interface) on a server.
- Autonomous Worker: As a member of a small, elite team, you must be self-starting and capable of managing your own project timelines without heavy oversight.
- Continuous Learner: The smart building landscape changes monthly; you must be passionate about staying ahead of the curve in IoT and AI-driven automation.
