The Senior Estimator is responsible for managing the preparation and submission of accurate, competitive tenders within agreed timeframes. The role plays a key part in securing new projects and ensuring a smooth transition from tender stage to project delivery. The Senior Estimator works closely with internal teams and clients, supports business development activities, and provides guidance and mentoring to junior estimators.
Tender Preparation
- Prepare accurate cost estimates using schedules of works, bills of quantities, drawings, and specifications.
- Complete detailed take-offs and measurements for labour, plant, and materials.
- Ensure tenders are completed within required timescales and maintain accurate tender records.
- Follow up on submitted tenders to support successful contract awards.
Bid Management
- Take ownership of allocated tenders and manage them through the full estimating lifecycle.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to maximize conversion of tenders into awarded projects.
Client Communication
- Obtain all required project information from clients, including drawings, specifications, and variations.
- Maintain clear and professional communication with clients throughout the tender process.
Site Visits
- Attend site visits during the tender stage to assess project requirements and gather relevant information.
Internal Collaboration
- Liaise with internal teams such as commercial, operations, and contract management to ensure alignment on project requirements.
- Support effective information flow between estimating and delivery teams.
Handover & Documentation
- Ensure all details for awarded projects are accurately documented and handed over to relevant teams.
- Organize and lead internal handover or pre-start meetings, ensuring actions are recorded and completed.
- Provide estimating support for variations when required.
Reporting & Meetings
- Provide regular updates on tender status to management.
- Actively participate in team meetings, presenting awarded projects, key metrics, and work in progress.
Procurement Support
- Assist with procurement activities as required to support project delivery.
Business Development
- Promote best practices in customer service.
- Identify and support new business opportunities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes.
Skills and Knowledge
- Estimating & Industry Experience: Strong estimating experience within a construction, trade, or related industry. Industry experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications; relevant technical or construction qualifications are advantageous.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present information clearly and confidently to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Client Focus: Strong customer service mindset with the ability to build and maintain effective client relationships.
- Technical & IT Skills: Proficiency in estimating software and standard office applications, particularly spreadsheets.
- Professional Approach: Confident and professional telephone and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
