At Ofgem, insight into wholesale markets plays a critical role in maintaining secure, resilient and well-functioning energy systems. We’re seeking a Head of Wholesale Market Intelligence and Data to lead the analysis that underpins this work. Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator, driving toward Net Zero whilst protecting energy consumers, especially vulnerable people.
We’re offering a permanent opportunity to lead the Wholesale Market Intelligence and Data team within our Market Oversight and Enforcement directorate. This role will shape the insight that informs major regulatory, operational and policy decisions across the organisation.
In this highly visible leadership role, you’ll guide how wholesale market developments are interpreted and communicated, ensuring decision-makers have the insight they need to respond to emerging risks, evolving market dynamics and wider system challenges. You’ll work closely with senior colleagues and key partners, including government departments, the National Energy System Operator, the Financial Conduct Authority and international regulatory counterparts.
With strong analytical expertise and experience, both quantitative and qualitative, you’ll have a background of working with complex data and the ability to translate insight into clear advice for senior audiences. Alongside your analytical capability, you’ll be an experienced leader able to motivate teams, build strong partnerships and deliver results in fast-moving and high-profile environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set strategy and priorities for the team.
- Lead and motivate a team of around 7 staff and act as part of the leadership team of the Market Oversight and Enforcement directorate.
- Build links across key Ofgem teams and external stakeholders to ensure that the team receives relevant information and can support on related areas of work.
- Support and collaborate with policy teams in producing robust and high-quality analysis to enable good decision-making.
- Lead and direct others to implement improvements to our existing processes and outputs.
Key Outputs and Deliverables:
- Management responsibility for a team of around 7 people.
- Briefings and updates on key market developments for senior level internal and external stakeholders.
- Analysis of market data including commodity prices, gas and power fundamentals and wholesale trade data to provide market insights.
- Developing and improving regular reports to ensure the team provides necessary and useful information to stakeholders.
- Overseeing collection and validation of key data sets.
- Ensuring the team has robust processes for security of supply emergency preparedness.
- Leading our response to live events with robust analysis and advice.
Excellent analytical and quantitative skills are required, along with experience in analysing quantitative and qualitative information to support conclusions. The ability to effectively communicate and synthesise analysis and data for senior decision-makers and external audiences, both verbally and in writing, is essential. Experience leading and motivating a team, along with excellent interpersonal and team working skills, is also necessary.
You should be able to meet challenging deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
