The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) exists to protect and improve the natural environment. Established by the Environment Act 2021, our role is to hold government and public bodies in England and Northern Ireland to account. We do this by:
- Reporting on progress towards environmental commitments
- Advising on environmental law
- Receiving and investigating public complaints
- Taking enforcement action when appropriate
You will be part of the Insights Directorate, contributing to our strategic goal of holding governments accountable for environmental targets, in line with Environmental Improvement Plans. We are a dynamic, flexible organisation of just over 90 staff, working across England, Northern Ireland, and reserved UK environmental matters.
The successful candidate will support the OEP's nutrients programme in Northern Ireland and England, with a current focus on wastewater and agriculture in Northern Ireland. In the next 12 months, we plan to:
- Monitor and evaluate government progress in reducing nutrient loss
- Complete an environmental law report on agricultural pollution regulations
- Assess potential breaches of environmental law related to nutrient management in Northern Ireland
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate scientific evidence into policy-relevant recommendations
- Engage and collaborate with stakeholders and experts across multiple disciplines
- Support the management of the college of experts, linking their expertise to OEP priority areas
- Provide technical and scientific support to:
- Advise government
- Monitor environmental law
- Review complaints
- Undertake investigations

Person Specification
Essential:
- Degree in a relevant scientific or environmental field, or equivalent experience (e.g., agronomy, environmental/water engineering, soil science, pollution science)
- Experience collecting, analysing, interpreting, and presenting scientific and policy evidence
- Ability to operate at the science-policy interface
- Experience commissioning/managing external research
- Excellent communication skills, including clear non-technical summaries
- Collaborative experience with multidisciplinary teams and external experts
- Ability to manage risks and work flexibly across a range of projects
- Strong team player with initiative and a proactive approach
