Offbeat is a specialist audiobook and spoken word studio based on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. We are looking for a freelance audiobook director to work in person in the studio on a small but growing number of productions. This role is about language, narrative accuracy and performance. It is not an engineering or music production role.

You will follow the script line by line with the narrator during recording. You will spot deviations from the text, missed or substituted words and consistency issues as they happen. You will keep the narrator on track with character voices, tone, pacing and narrative flow. You need a strong grasp of English pronunciation, meaning and structure, and the confidence to give calm, precise direction in the room.

You do not need Pro Tools experience. Training will be provided. Operation is record only, start, stop and basic punch and roll. There is no editing, mixing or technical responsibility.

This role suits someone with a literary and analytical mindset combined with artistic judgement. You are comfortable with text and structure and also understand performance and storytelling. Voice or audiobook experience is helpful but not essential. This role is not suitable for audio engineers, music producers or purely creatives. It is also not suitable for jobbing actors, as availability and continuity are important.

Selection includes an initial short assessment conversation, followed by a paid in studio trial session. An initial paid training and shadowing period will then be offered at £15 per studio hour. Once you are able to confidently run a session independently, the rate is £25 per studio hour.

Work is freelance and strictly in person. Initially one or two audiobook productions per month, with clear scope for more work and progression into other studio roles including voice over and ADR support once audiobook workflows are mastered.

If this sounds like you, please get in touch with a short summary of your background and interest in audiobook direction.
