An experienced Mechanical Fitter is required to support the overhaul, retrofit, repair, and testing of industrial gearbox systems and renewable energy drivetrain equipment, with a particular focus on wind turbine gearboxes and heavy industrial transmission assemblies. The role involves full strip and rebuild activities, fault diagnosis, component inspection, retrofit modifications, precision assembly, and commissioning support within workshop and field-service environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out gearbox overhauls to OEM specifications, completing retrofit and upgrade programmes, and ensuring all transmission assemblies achieve required operational, reliability, and quality standards prior to installation and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete strip-down, inspection, overhaul, and rebuild of industrial gearbox systems and wind turbine transmission assemblies.
  • Carry out retrofit modifications, upgrade installations, and engineering improvements to gearbox and drivetrain systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical failures including bearing damage, gear wear, shaft misalignment, lubrication failures, seal degradation, and housing defects.
  • Conduct detailed dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, laser alignment tools, and verniers.
  • Measure and set bearing preloads, gear backlash, shaft runout, end float, and assembly tolerances in accordance with OEM specifications.
  • Perform gearbox failure analysis and identify root causes through detailed component inspection and condition assessment.
  • Recondition gearbox housings, shafts, gears, bearing journals, and rotating assemblies using approved engineering and reclamation techniques.
  • Assemble and install lubrication systems, oil pumps, cooling circuits, filtration systems, couplings, and associated drivetrain components.
  • Carry out inspection and replacement of planetary gear sets, high-speed shafts, intermediate stages, and main bearing assemblies within wind turbine gearbox systems.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly procedures, technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, and service documentation.
  • Support gearbox removal, installation, alignment, commissioning, and functional testing activities both onsite and within workshop facilities.
  • Perform mechanical alignment of coupled rotating equipment using laser alignment systems and precision measurement techniques.
  • Complete final inspection and testing procedures to verify gearbox operational performance, vibration levels, and assembly quality standards.
  • Maintain overhaul records, inspection reports, measurement data, and component traceability documentation in line with quality procedures.

Skills & Experience Required
