Head of Department, Property | Mixed Property

Commercial + Residential. Leadership + Autonomy. And yes, there is flexibility.

We're working with a growing North London law firm that is looking to appoint a Head of Property to take ownership of its established Property department.

The flexibility is particularly worth highlighting.

Although the role is based in North London, the firm is open to discussing a working pattern of around 1 to 2 days per week in the office, with scope for occasional weeks where office attendance isn't required, depending on the individual.

This is a genuine leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys being close enough to the work to understand what is going on, but senior enough to have the autonomy to shape how the department operates and develops.

And importantly, this isn't a role where you need to choose between Commercial and Residential.

The successful candidate will need to be comfortable across both sides of Property, with the existing caseload currently weighted more towards Residential.

The Opportunity

  • You'll take responsibility for overseeing a team comprising two fee earners and a paralegal, including a Consultant and Senior Fee Earner
  • Your role will combine leadership, technical oversight and hands-on involvement where required
  • You'll be trusted to support the team, manage the department effectively and help maintain the positive culture that has developed as the firm has grown
  • The firm has come a long way from its previous structure and has developed into a Legal 500 practice, with a strong team dynamic and a positive working environment
  • What You'll Be Doing
  • Taking overall responsibility for the Property department
  • Managing and supporting the existing Property team
  • Providing technical guidance across both Residential and Commercial Property
  • Overseeing the department's caseload and ensuring matters are managed effectively
  • Remaining sufficiently hands-on to deal with matters where required
  • Supporting the continued development and growth of the department
  • Working closely with the wider firm and contributing to its ongoing success
  • Who We're Looking For

This could suit a number of profiles, including an existing Head of Department, Senior Property Solicitor or Consultant who is ready to take the next step into a leadership position.

You'll ideally have

  • Experience across both Residential and Commercial Property
  • The technical breadth to oversee a mixed Property caseload
  • The confidence to take ownership and make decisions
  • Experience supporting, supervising or managing other fee earners
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong relationships within a team
  • The ambition to take responsibility for a department rather than simply manage your own caseload

The key here is breadth.

This isn't designed for someone who has spent their entire career exclusively in either Residential or Commercial Property.

You need to be comfortable enough across both areas to oversee the department as a whole.

  • Why This Role Stands Out
  • Salary up to around £90,000
  • North London
  • Genuine Head of Department responsibility
  • Mixed Residential and Commercial Property
  • Join a firm that has grown significantly and developed into a Legal 500 practice
  • Established team with a strong and positive culture
  • Flexible office attendance for the right person

So if you're currently sitting in a senior Property position thinking "I'm ready to lead, but I don't necessarily want to be chained to a desk five days a week," this could be an interesting one
