We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Costs Draftsperson / Costs Lawyer to join a busy London-based legal team. This is a key position within the finance function, responsible for managing a varied caseload of legal aid and private costs work.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced costs professional looking to take ownership of complex billing, cost recovery, and negotiation work within a supportive and professional environment.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and submit fixed fee and exceptional legal aid bills, including high-cost case plans
- Compile and submit Legal Aid Agency (LAA) bundles
- Liaise with counsel’s chambers to ensure timely and accurate fee submissions
- Coordinate recovery of costs and disbursements with fee earners and third parties
- Advise on cost recovery strategies and negotiate cost offers
- Serve bills in line with procedural rules and cost assessment protocols
- Monitor CCMS notifications and ensure compliance with LAA deadlines
- Prepare interim and final private bills of costs
- Support billing, file closure, and general finance processes
- Provide guidance and training to colleagues on best practice in costs recovery
- Strong experience in costs law (2–4+ years minimum)
- Proven background as a Costs Draftsperson and/or Costs Lawyer
- Strong knowledge of LAA cost assessment guidance and legislation
- Experience using CCMS
- Confident drafting inter partes bills and handling high-cost family law matters
- Experience in costs negotiation
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills
- Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Cost Master)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Advocacy experience
- Business development / commercial awareness
- Experience supporting or training junior colleagues
- Social media or marketing awareness
