OCU are seeking a Civils Operative to work from our Reading office. A Civils Operative is typically responsible for carrying out a range of civil engineering tasks related to construction, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, utilities, and drainage systems.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the construction of civil engineering projects, including excavation, concreting, laying pipes, and installing drainage systems, following engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks on existing infrastructure, such as patching roads, repairing potholes, clearing blocked drains, and replacing damaged sections of utilities.
  • Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment, such as excavators, dump trucks, compactors, and jackhammers, safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and safe working practices at all times, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to risk assessments and method statements.
  • Implement traffic management measures such as road closures, diversions, and signage to ensure the safety of workers and the public during construction and maintenance activities.
  • Carry out work to a high standard of quality and craftsmanship, following established procedures and best practices, and adhering to relevant quality standards and specifications.
  • Implement environmental protection measures to minimize the impact of construction activities on the environment, such as erosion control, waste management, and pollution prevention.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, and other stakeholders to coordinate activities, share knowledge and expertise, and achieve project objectives safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate records of work activities, including work orders, timesheets, inspection reports, and incident logs, and submit reports to supervisors or management as required.
  • Interact with members of the public, residents, and other stakeholders in a professional and courteous manner, addressing enquiries, providing information, and resolving complaints or concerns effectively.
Skills & Responsibilities
  • Previous experience in civil engineering, construction, or a related field is desirable, although on-the-job training may be provided for entry-level positions.
  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction techniques, and materials, as well as familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment commonly used in civil engineering works.
  • Awareness of health and safety regulations, hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe working practices in the construction industry, with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Good physical fitness and stamina, as the role may involve working outdoors in various weather conditions, lifting heavy objects, and performing physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, following instructions, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing positively to a harmonious and productive work environment.
  • Basic verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand and follow instructions, communicate effectively with colleagues, and interact professionally with members of the public.
  • A valid UK driving license may be required, as the role may involve traveling to different work sites and operating company vehicles or machinery.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime, to meet project deadlines and respond to emergency situations as required.
