As a Senior Planner, you are responsible for developing and managing project programmes across all phases, from inception, feasibility, tender, and bid through to completion, covering Design, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning activities. You liaise closely with construction and site teams to update programmes, monitor progress, and provide management insights and reporting. The role spans projects including large EHV cabling, substation construction, and new energy/low carbon builds. You report to the Senior Planning & Project Controls Manager, manage a Planner and Trainee, and work closely with Framework Managers, Project Managers, and Site Managers.

The analysis and evaluation of project tender and bid documents to build detailed programmes specifying cost, time and resource requirements (NEC or other contract types). Liaise with members of tender and bid teams during the tender process as required and co-ordinate their input into planning activities. Development of tender and bid programmes into construction programmes (1st principals). Production and updating programmes throughout the duration and life cycle of Projects. Implement change control processes: including early warnings, compensations events and construction/project managers instructions as and when required and supply chain inputs/outputs. Detail the effects of the change events - early warnings and project managers’ instructions to the approved programme and report back to the business areas. Co-ordination of inputs and outputs into/form the programme from the construction team and take the ‘lead’ on programme development and timely updating, analysis and critique. Review construction progress with input from the construction team, including the supply chain, update programmes and produce MI/MO reports as necessary. Create earned value/project reporting encompassing resource & cost loading with associated CPI & SPI reporting. Highlight areas of concern about construction progress and review risks and mitigation measures with the construction and delivery teams. Assist the Project Manager as directed with planning related matters. Attend meetings as required with Project Teams and Clients. Liaise with Client’s Planners, Construction Managers and Project Managers as required. Attend site regularly (if not based on site) to assist teams with planning matters. Collation of progress information & production of progress reporting as required. Ensure planning techniques across the Company are complied with and adhered to. Management and supervision of other Planners as directed by the Planning Manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Primavera P6 Experienced Practitioner (Mandatory)
  • Experience with NEC Form of Contracts (Mandatory)
  • Working Knowledge of FIDIC & JCT Forms of Contract (Desirable)
  • HNC (Construction related) or equivalent.
  • Demonstration of knowledge and practical application of project controls, planning and construction activities.
  • Computer literate with a good working knowledge of planning and controls tools and techniques, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Primavera P6
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card – Visitor – Yellow (can be obtained).
  • Keep informed of updates, new technology and software developments.
  • Driving Licence.
