What will you be doing?
You’ll be joining our Devices Team, the function behind our connected hardware products like the Home Mini and Heat Pumps. We bring together engineers from cloud, mobile, backend, and embedded disciplines to work collaboratively across the full stack of smart energy hardware. It’s a multidisciplinary team with a strong product focus, and a great place to shape the future of home energy tech.
You’ll find a wide variety of challenges in the work we do as we help push the energy revolution forward. Our teams are multi-disciplined and collaborate between countries, meaning you have what you need to get the right people together and build the next great thing.
The focus of this role would be serverless backend IoT services deployed in the cloud, however you would be working in a cross-functional team touching everything from mobile apps to core infrastructure, and so would have the opportunity to influence the entire stack.
Our ideal engineer would be an individual who loves to engage with interesting software problems, with an interest in full-stack development and the passion to build and shape the future within a collaborative, community-based environment. We operate a highly agile development approach, giving wide scope to be involved with hands-on system-design, test driven development, deployment and operations.
What you\’ll do:
- Design, build and maintain high performance, reusable & reliable code
- Ensure the best possible performance, reliability and quality of the platform
- Contribute to development across the entire stack from the front end down to the infrastructure that the platform runs on
- Contribute to the software engineering culture here at Octopus Energy
- Collaborate regularly with colleagues with many different professional specialities to create innovative solutions that delight our customers and colleagues
- Mentor junior engineers via pairing, design review & code review
- Work as part of a team of engineers, regularly seeking feedback and growing your skills as technical professionals.
What you\’ll have:
- In depth industry experience in software development & design
- Proven experience in one of the following: Typescript, Node.Js
- Experience with AWS or similar cloud providers, and serverless technologies e.g. AWS Lambda, Kinesis, DynamoDB, API Gateway
- A drive to get things done in a collaborative, agile development environment
- A proven ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent analytical and multitasking skills
It would be great if you had:
- Python, Django, SQL, Front-end development experience
- Experience of working with IoT technologies and systems, e.g. MQTT, AWS IoT Core, Greengrass etc
- Experience developing, securing or operating cloud scale applications or infrastructure; ideally terraform or cloudformation
- Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes etc) and passion for improving the way cloud applications are built
