About Octopus and the Analytics Platform team. Over the past ten years, Octopus Energy Group has expanded from a UK startup to become the UK's largest energy provider and a global leader, serving over 10 million customers across eight countries. The Analytics Platform team is brand new to the company and is tasked with consolidating analytics tooling and building a strategy for consistent data modelling across all our global businesses. We are building a platform that each country can plug their respective data into and get consistent data to be used to optimise customer journeys for each region or metrics at the global level by the group management team.
Our mission is to build a platform for analytics where:
- Producers can build efficient pipelines from source data to insight with ease
- Producers can scale out Modelling & BI to any number of Octopus Energy businesses around the world
- Producers can provide insight via notebooks for detailed storytelling and dashboards for live updates on a domain
- Consumers can find what they’re looking for with ease
- Consumers have trust in the metrics and dashboards they’re presented with
- Consumers can self-serve if needed
- Consumers can retrieve data via automation
What you’ll do. Our data analysts, business analysts, data scientists etc. use a variety of tools to transform source data into insight. Your role is to improve their interaction with these tools, whether they are internally or externally developed. Some examples of this type of work:
- Improving our in-house dbt CLI wrapper to make it more user friendly and optimise runtimes
- Monitor tooling interaction with tools like Sentry or Datadog to identify areas for improvement
- Developing our internal BI tooling powered by Streamlit to improve user experience and improve accessibility for less technical users
- Integrate 3rd party tooling via APIs / SDKs and Terraform.
What you'll have. We love to hear from applicants who are willing to take the initiative and find their niche at Octopus Energy. Whilst we’re happy to guide people through priorities, people who find new ways to have an impact on the business will do well here. Please don’t be put off if you’re missing any particular tooling experience; we have plenty of incredible developers at Octopus Energy who are willing to teach if you’re willing to learn!
Required experience:
- Python
- Git
Nice to have:
- SQL
- dbt
- Github
- CircleCI
- Airflow
- Kubernetes
- Terraform
- A Cloud warehouse provider e.g. Databricks, GCP, Snowflake
- AWS
We aren’t necessarily looking for someone who is “10-out-of-10” in all these areas; but rather someone who has good experience in most of them, combined with a flexible and enthusiastic approach.
Preferably, this is a hybrid role based out of our London office. Our expectation is that you spend ideally 3 days a week in the office so that you can build relationships and collaborate with colleagues across the business. If you would like to apply from outside the UK we can be flexible on alternate setups provided you are getting in-person time with the team and colleagues. This might mean travelling to the UK on a regular cadence for short visits.
Why else you'll love it here:
Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!
