Octopus Energy Group is an energy tech company. We use technology to make green electrons cheap and revolutionise customer experiences. By combining worldâclass tech with brilliant humans who care deeply about customers and driving the renewable energy transition, we made it happen and in 2025, we became Britain's largest energy supplier. Now, weâre scaling fast and building the next generation of products to accelerate the green energy transition.
Weâre looking for a creative, humanâcentered Designer to bring Octopus to life in the UK. Weâre searching for people who understand UX, tone of voice, persuasion and reassurance, but most of all, can make the complex simple and create things that work for humans. You might come from an agency background or a startâup, and have probably made a living from your main trade, but youâre openâminded and willing to try it all.
Beyond design, we embody a culture of autonomy, curiosity, and relentless improvement. Youâre unlikely to receive a curated brief; there are no account managers here. Youâll navigate your own journey, driven by a passion to explore, enhance, and take on transformative projects that no one else dares to tackle. This doesnât mean youâre on your own though, thereâs a whole team of likeâminded people here to support you.
Weâre pretty obsessive about our customers. We think about them a lot. A lot, a lot. We answer emails from customers, we join in on social media, we think constantly about what makes great experiences, great stories and great reasons for people to join us.
Weâre looking for someone who knows their way around design for the real world â youâve explored design and all of its elements. Worked on campaigns, web experiences or maybe events, all from an idea in a sketchbook to launch and beyond. But actually, what you really geek out on is how real humans use technology in their real, actual, messy lives: the ones full of love, loss, stress, selfâinterest and tedium.
You know the tools and theories of HumanâCentred Design, but all the talk of process makes you cry inside. What really matters is the outcome, not how you get there - and you just want to make great stuff. Youâre looking forward to not working on a user persona.
Youâre enthusiastic, and that enthusiasm means other people follow your lead and youâll get stuff done. Youâre a grafter, but a smart grafter. You put effort where it delivers the most value: youâll wireframe just enough to communicate what you need to a developer. If your resources are limited, youâll find a workaround.
You love an office vibe. Youâre a people person and love to spend time collaborating and working in the presence of your team. Youâre not afraid of collaborative projects and thrive when working with others.
Finally, youâre not a fan of traditional businesses. You can live without working to backlogs, or writing business cases. You prioritise effectiveness and efficiency above all else. You get stuff done by knowing whatâs right, and sometimes thatâs hard.
What youâll do...
- You will work with a wildly talented, diverse and passionate team to deliver products and campaigns to market in record time.
- You will work with developers to build products and make sure your designs come to life and work effectively in the real world.
- You will conduct firstâhand research and talk to actual humans to understand their needs, wants and context.
What youâll need...
- 1+ years of experience in a generalist design role working on projects covering UX/UI, product design, graphic design, visual design or marketing.
- Proficiency in a variety of design tools such as Figma, Adobe CC suite.
- Knowledge of UX/UI, graphic design and illustration.
- An understanding of what makes a good customer experience, behavioural sciences and marketing principles.
- An understanding of design principles, user experience, user interface design and design systems.
- A desire to get stuck into any kind of design project, you love a challenge.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a willingness to learn on your feet.
- Entrepreneurial instincts with clear bias for action and track record of rolling up your sleeves.
- Passionate about collaboration and communication, leaving ego at the door to get the job done.
- An interest in sustainability, green energy and improving peopleâs lives.
- Bonus: Motion graphics or animation skills (After effects, SVGator, etc.)
To really thrive, youâll likely possess:
- The ability to work efficiently and swiftly without sacrificing the quality of your output.
- Adaptability; youâll have the mindset of a generalist rather than a specialist, with a broad skill set that allows for versatility in various design tasks.
- Youâre comfortable with ambiguity and autonomy, you donât need a brief to get going.
- A deepâseeded curiosity for how people interact with technology, and creating frictionless, delightful experiences.
- A userâcentric approach to design, prioritising the needs and experiences of users while creating functional, visually appealing products that have the ability to surprise and delight.
- A passion for improvement â youâre always analysing user feedback and iterating on designs to improve usability, userâcentricity, accessibility, and overall customer satisfaction.
- A passion for selfâprogression and are keen to develop your skills, both with guidance and independently.
