The Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE) is a long‑term, collaborative partnership between Octavius, Network Rail and supply chain partners, created to safely and efficiently renew critical railway infrastructure across the Southern region. As the framework continues to progress, we are enhancing our engineering capability to support safe, compliant and efficient delivery. We are now recruiting a Civils Project Engineer (Contractors Responsible Engineer – CRE) to play a key role in the engineering leadership on our Electrification & Plant (E&P) portfolio. This is a hybrid role, balancing work from home, SRE offices and regular visits to sites across the Southern region.

Purpose of the Role

As a Project Engineer (CRE) within the SRE Framework, you will provide day‑to‑day engineering leadership across a range of renewal projects, reporting to the Engineering Manager (CEM) and ensuring that works are delivered safely, compliantly and to the required technical standards within live operational railway environments. You will ensure that all engineering activity across design, construction and commissioning, is planned and coordinated in line with Network Rail standards, CDM Regulations and project‑specific Engineering Management Plans. Operating as a central technical interface, you will support multidisciplinary teams delivering a variety of works including civils, structures, buildings, M&E, telecoms, E&P interfaces and associated temporary and permanent works.

  • Implement Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality controls.
  • Manage day-to-day construction engineering activities.
  • Collaborate with the CEM, Project Manager, Design Manager, and CREs for alignment.
  • Provide construction technical support to the CEM, Project Manager and site teams.
  • Review and respond to Technical Queries and participate in reviews.
  • Work closely with the Project Commercial team for accurate cost estimates.
  • Liaise with the Project Planner and construction affiliates for project plans.
  • Review designs for compliance with requirements, constructability and residual hazards applying the principles of prevention.

  • Design and installation experience.
  • Ability to manage and direct site staff.
  • Knowledge of railway infrastructure work.
  • Familiarity with CDM 2015 regulations.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
  • Background in rail Contracting, construction, Civil Engineering, building services and other railway disciplines.
  • Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC).
  • Problem-Solving, Attention to Detail, and Communication skills.
  • IEng / CEng or working towards professional registration with the ICE, IET, IMechE or other relevant engineering body.
  • Time Management, Adaptability, and Resilience under pressure.
  • Ethical Conduct and Continuous Learning mindset.

  • Degree qualified in a Railway Engineering Discipline and membership of relevant professional body or institution.
  • Experience and demonstrable competence of undertaking a TWC role.
  • Hold a full UK Driving Licence.
