Days of Working: Mon‑Fri 8 hrs per day with occasional weekends to meet the needs of the business. To provide an efficient, responsive, and high-quality maintenance service within a PFI operated hospital environment. The Handyman will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, and minor works to ensure the hospital estate remains safe, compliant, and fully operational for clinical services.

As part of your role, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • General Maintenance
    • Carry out day to day repairs including carpentry, basic plumbing, painting, decorating, and general fabric maintenance.
    • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance requests logged through the reception team.
    • Support the contract manager by assisting with routine inspections and general duties.
  • Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
    • Complete scheduled PPM tasks in line with contractual requirements and hospital compliance standards.
    • Maintain accurate records of all works carried out, including materials used and time spent.
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Ensure all work is completed in line with HTMs (Health Technical Memoranda) and H&S legislation relevant to hospital environments.
    • Conduct work safely in patient occupied areas with minimal disruption.
    • Report any defects, risks, or hazards to the contract manager immediately.
    • Always follow site infection control procedures.
  • Customer Service
    • Liaise professionally with clinical staff, contractors, and visitors while undertaking works.
    • Provide clear communication regarding job status and expected completion times.
    • Maintain a customer focused approach, understanding the sensitive nature of the healthcare environment.
  • Additional Duties
    • Assist with porterage, furniture moves, and minor project works.
    • Escort contractors where required.
    • Participate in shift patterns or on call rotas depending on contract requirements.
    • Support emergency response tasks (e.g., water leaks, making areas safe).
  • Water Safety & Management
    • Carry out routine water safety tasks in accordance with the Water Safety Plan and HTM 04 01 requirements, including:
    • Weekly tap flushing of infrequently used outlets.
    • Recording temperatures of hot and cold-water systems.
    • Inspecting TMVs (Thermostatic Mixing Valves) for correct operation (non technical checks).
    • Identifying signs of stagnation, discolouration, or unusual odours.
  • Ensure all water hygiene records are completed accurately and submitted promptly via the site logbooks.
  • Report any water safety concerns immediately, including temperature non compliances or suspected Legionella risks.
  • Work safely in clinical and patient occupied areas, ensuring minimal disruption during flushing and testing tasks.
  • Support contract manager and Authorised Persons during audits, sampling, and inspections.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Essential
    • Experience in building maintenance, preferably within healthcare, commercial, or PFI environments.
    • Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, painting, tiling, and general fabric maintenance.
    • Good understanding of health & safety and safe working practices.
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
    • Strong customer service and communication skills.
    • Competent in using smartphones or tablets for CAFM systems.
  • Desirable
    • Previous experience in a hospital or PFI contract.
    • Awareness of HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) requirements.
    • Basic electrical knowledge (non qualified tasks).
    • NVQ Level 2 in a relevant trade or equivalent experience.

  • Includes plant rooms, service corridors, wards, and clinical spaces.
  • May involve shift work, weekend working, or out of hours response depending on contract.
