Opthalmic Technician

Established in December 2018, OCL Vision was formed from the merger of three highly successful, world-recognised eye surgeons offering our patients premium vision correction. We offer specialist consultations, diagnostics, laser eye surgery, and lens surgical treatments from our flagship clinic in Central London as well as clinics in the surrounding areas and Hertfordshire.

OCL Ophthalmic technicians play a pivotal role in the patient journey and help to coordinate the management plan required for the patient. Technicians must ensure they are fully trained on all diagnostic equipment to facilitate the patient journey and to integrate high-quality person-centred care. The technicians will scan patients, ensuring ophthalmic measurements are available for visual acuity to be assessed and to enable calculations for lenses to be completed by their optometrist colleagues.

• Provide technical support to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic tests as requested by clinicians.
• Carry out accurate diagnostic tests including Biometry, OCT, auto refraction, Pentacam, ECC, Focimetry, Peramis, Sirius, and Visual fields (Humphrey field analyser).
• Perform IOP checks.
• Provide pre and post-operative care to patients and their carers within the level of competence.
• Actively support and assist patients on surgery days, ensuring effective communication.
• Explain the significance of pre-operative investigations.
• Undertake effective communication with patients in specific clinical situations including handling patient enquiries effectively, referring to a medical practitioner if necessary, and providing service excellence.
• Provide basic advice on health promotion, particularly related to ophthalmic surgery.
• Support general clinics by carrying out a range of technical measurements and tests.
• Assist with administrative and clerical tasks related to imaging and technical services.
• Maintain accurate records for all clinics undertaken.
• Assist in the printing of all modes of ophthalmic imaging as required.
• Be aware and sensitive to patients’ and relatives’ needs, always adopting an empathetic and personal approach.

• Organise notes and outpatient lists to ensure smooth running of schedules, using the ERM system or manual records as appropriate.
• Prepare consulting, examination, and treatment rooms throughout the day, ensuring rooms are tidy and stocked with appropriate equipment and stationery.
• Offer advice regarding appointments and tests.
• Manage diagnostic equipment effectively, including scheduling patients and backing up diagnostic information.
• Ensure efficient operation of patient data management systems, including transferring files between computers.
• Clean, prepare, and assemble associated equipment prior to and during treatment, in line with CQC guidelines and company protocols.
• Open and close consulting and diagnostic rooms, ensuring all equipment is clean and operational, and report any faults on internal systems.

• To attain competencies in line with the company's onboarding process.
• Work with all staff to ensure awareness of the uses, safety precautions, and handling of equipment within clinical areas.
• Ensure correct storage of all equipment and report any concerns to the appropriate manager.
• Follow correct procedures for documenting and reporting any accidents or incidents.
• Undertake training in ophthalmic imaging and technical procedures under the supervision of the Head Orthoptist or other designated staff.

• Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date documentation in line with legal and professional standards.
• Communicate assessment and treatment results to appropriate disciplines.
• Be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for departmental use.
• Be aware of Health and Safety aspects of the job, implement policies to improve workplace safety, and report any adverse incidents promptly.
• Comply with policies and procedures and participate in their review and updating as appropriate.
• Ensure checklists are completed robustly and any non-compliances are escalated and resolved.
• As part of delivering excellence, Ophthalmic technicians are responsible for governance in relation to the escalation of risk, reporting of incidents, the development of policies and procedures, and the management of clinical audit related to their practice.

• Essential: Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology or equivalent.
• Ability to demonstrate initiative.
• Approachable, polite, and flexible with excellent communication skills.
• Manual dexterity.
• Basic IT skills.
• Ability to plan and prioritise own and others' workload.
• Demonstrates an interest in the specialty.
• Ability to perform Humphrey Visual Field testing, OCT scan, retinal photography, and biometry.
• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Recent experience in an ophthalmic environment.

• Desirable: Previous experience with IOLMaster and A-scan ultrasound. Recent experience of working in the specialty.
