Who You'll Work For

Our client is a technology organisation building sophisticated data and analytics products at scale. Their engineering team operates with a strong culture of quality and innovation, and this role sits at the heart of how they design, deliver, and evolve the systems their clients depend on every day.

What You'll Be Doing

This is a hands-on technical leadership role with broad ownership across distributed systems and data platforms. Your remit covers:

  • Leading the design and development of distributed, fault-tolerant systems
  • Building and scaling reporting and analytics platforms that handle high data volumes
  • Owning technical delivery from concept through to production
  • Driving architectural decisions across backend and data systems
  • Ensuring high performance, scalability, and reliability across applications
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver data-driven features
  • Mentoring engineers and raising engineering best practices across the team

Your Impact

At this level, your decisions shape the systems that power client-facing insights and reporting. You will be the person others look to on the hardest architectural questions, and your influence will be felt across teams, not just in your own delivery.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • 7+ years building scalable, distributed systems
  • Strong experience with object-oriented programming languages
  • Experience with backend frameworks and API development
  • Strong SQL skills and proven ability working with large datasets
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling and modern development practices
  • Prior technical leadership and mentoring experience

Desirable

  • Exposure to data analytics or visualisation tools
  • Experience with reporting platform design or client-facing analytics products
  • Background working in cross-functional, globally distributed teams

What's In It For You

  • Competitive salary of up to £90,000
  • Private healthcare
  • Pension scheme
  • Hybrid working from Belfast
  • Senior leadership role with genuine architectural influence
  • Work on large-scale, high-impact data and analytics systems

How to prepare for a job interview at Ocho

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Ocho uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
