About the Company:

Our client is a well-known consumer technology business that is transforming a traditional industry through smart technology, fresh thinking and a genuine focus on people. They operate a squad based delivery model with multidisciplinary teams that take real ownership of their work, and they have built an engineering culture founded on trust, honesty and continuous improvement. Their stack runs on Azure including Front Door, App Services, Application Insights and App Configuration, with SQL Server and Cosmos DB for data and Azure Service Bus for messaging. They work democratically across their Back End Chapter to evolve the stack and drive improvements that benefit the whole engineering organisation.

The Role:

This is a Lead Backend Engineer position at the heart of one of three product squads, leading a multidisciplinary team spanning back end, front end, QA, UX, content and product management. Your time will be split between coaching back end developers, steering back end architecture, and providing hands-on technical contribution - delivering some work independently and others through coaching and oversight. You will be accountable for the quality, performance and security of everything your squad ships, as well as for contributing to wider back end architecture and standards through the Back End Chapter. The role also involves integrating AI and LLM capabilities into back end services, and exposure to agentic AI patterns is increasingly valued here. This is a genuinely hands-on leadership role for someone who wants to coach, shape and deliver in equal measure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, delivery and ongoing health of back end services owned by your squad - from technical direction and architectural decisions through to hands-on coding, code review and production support.
  • Coach and grow the back end engineers in your squad, enabling them to take on harder problems with increasing independence over time.
  • Steer back end architecture decisions and provide technical oversight across the squad's backlog.
  • Integrate AI and LLM capabilities into back end services using OpenAI, Azure OpenAI or similar APIs.
  • Contribute to the Back End Chapter - shaping standards, tooling and shared improvements adopted across squads.
  • Collaborate across disciplines including QA, front end and product to ensure smooth squad delivery every sprint.
  • Participate in all Agile ceremonies and contribute to planning, discovery, build, release and monitoring across the full lifecycle.
  • Support cross squad front end, QA and DevOps work where needed to help the team hit sprint goals.

What You'll Need:

Essential:

  • Strong C# development experience with .NET Core and .NET Web API.
  • Experience building microservices in .NET Core.
  • Experience using message-based architectures.
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL technologies.
  • Cloud development and architecture experience on Azure.
  • Experience with API design.
  • Experience working in Agile environments using Scrum or Kanban.
  • Knowledge of unit testing frameworks such as xUnit or nUnit.
  • Familiarity with modern UI frameworks and tooling including React and React Native.
  • Experience integrating AI and LLM capabilities into back end services.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to provide technical guidance and mentoring to mid-level and junior developers.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with TDD practices.
  • DevOps experience including CI and CD pipelines and infrastructure as code.
  • Experience managing a team of developers.
  • Exposure to agentic AI patterns including tool use, orchestration frameworks and MCP.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps build and release pipelines.
