About the role

Our client is a well-established, highly regarded IT Managed Services provider serving organisations from multinationals to public sector bodies and smaller businesses. They need a Field Engineer for their Northern Ireland team. This is a field role, not a desk job. You will be on the road daily across Northern Ireland sites, installing and maintaining PCs, printers, scanners, EPOS and network equipment, plus managing stock rotation of faulty spares. A genuine get up and go attitude and comfort with daily driving matters just as much as the technical skill set, if not more.

What we're looking for

  • The ideal candidate is a highly motivated self-starter with a strong desire to achieve.
  • You will present professionally, have very good interpersonal skills, and bring a strong customer focus to every visit.
  • Because this is a customer-driven business, flexibility is essential. You need to be able to react quickly when called upon, and travel is a core part of that.

Technical skills (preferred but not essential)

  • Strong technical aptitude and excellent diagnostic skills
  • PC hardware and software installation and maintenance
  • Experience installing maintenance kits and fuser units
  • EPOS installation knowledge
  • Experience with Windows operating systems
  • VPN setup
  • Laptop and PC assembly, printer and network hardware installation, and telephone/IT equipment configuration
  • Comms and network experience
  • Information security awareness

Education

  • Technical certificate, diploma, or equivalent experience
  • MCITP desirable

Personal qualities

  • Clear, confident communicator with customers, including effective questioning, listening and clarification
  • Takes ownership of customer problems through to resolution
  • Well organised, with the ability to plan, prioritise and act promptly
  • Drives for results, with a sense of urgency and attention to detail
  • Works well within a team and shares knowledge with colleagues
  • Willing to put in the effort required, including occasional after-hours, weekend or on-call work

Other requirements

  • A full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel daily across Northern Ireland sites is essential for this role
  • Occasional after-hours support and maintenance work, which may include weekends
  • Some heavy lifting involved, for example moving computers, servers and monitors

Salary and benefits

Circa £30,000 basic salary, with on-call allowance and bonus bringing total earnings to approximately £35,000 per year. Please apply now if you are meeting the above criteria, or contact Andrew Harrison directly.

How to prepare for a job interview at Ocho

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
