About the Company:
Our client is a US-headquartered technology business that recently completed a successful IPO and has followed it with results comfortably ahead of market expectations. Their engineering teams build the operational software that runs the core of the business, including ordering, logistics, invoicing, payments, inventory and cost capture, used every day by people across a large national operation. Leadership is investing heavily in engineering and AI from the top down, which means this is a place where good engineers are given the tools, trust and backing to do their best work.
The Role:
You will join a product engineering team working within a broader group of around 30 engineers across the UK and US. This is not a backend role with occasional frontend work; you will own features across the full stack and take them from a user's request to production without waiting on handoffs to product, design or another team. The culture is low on hierarchy and high on ownership: if a user flags a problem, you are trusted to understand it, fix it and tell the team, rather than raise a ticket and wait. You will thrive here if you have strong product instincts, enjoy working close to the people who use your software, and like having real autonomy over what you build and how.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own complex engineering problems end to end, from clarifying the need through design, delivery and measuring the impact in production.
- Design and build secure, scalable services, APIs and user interfaces using Python, React and TypeScript.
- Work directly with users and stakeholders to understand the real problem and form your own view of what is worth building.
- Make confident, well-reviewed changes across codebases you do not own, rather than handing work off to other teams.
- Lead or contribute to technical design discussions on architecture, integration patterns, performance and resilience.
- Use AI-assisted development tools throughout your workflow to deliver high-quality code faster.
- Build observability, monitoring and automated testing into the services you ship.
- Investigate production issues using data and observability to find root causes and prevent recurrence.
- Mentor other engineers through pairing, design reviews and constructive code review.
What You'll Need:
Essential:
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
- Genuine full-stack capability, including strong frontend delivery in React and TypeScript.
- Strong production experience in at least one modern language, with Python a real advantage.
- Solid system design skills across APIs, distributed systems, data models and security.
- Experience with cloud platforms (ideally AWS), CI/CD, automated testing and production observability.
- Active, effective day-to-day use of AI coding tools such as Claude, Cursor or Codex.
- A product mindset and the confidence to work independently without detailed instruction.
- Full right to work in the UK.
Nice to have:
- Experience with event-driven or streaming systems such as Kafka or Kinesis.
- Exposure to PostgreSQL and DynamoDB at scale.
Why Apply?
- Fully remote within the UK, with an engineering community based in Belfast.
- Excellent Pension, health cover.
- Real autonomy, a flat, distributed organisation that trusts engineers to ship without layers of process.
- Serious investment in AI tooling, with leadership that sees productive AI spend as money well spent.
- A considered interview process built around system design and real work, with time given to prepare properly.
- Positive testimonials from engineers Ocho has placed are available on request, so you can hear first-hand what working with us is like.

How to prepare for a job interview at Ocho
✨Brush Up on Your Coding Skills
For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.
✨Know Your Tools and Frameworks
Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Ocho uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.
✨Showcase Your Projects
Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.
✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions
While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
