About the Company
Our client is a fast moving product company building real time, connected technology at the intersection of IoT, mobile and cloud. They are entering a significant growth phase, transitioning from a UK and Ireland focused business to a truly global company, and they are building the engineering team that will take them there. This is not an agency - they build products that last, and they are looking for engineers who want genuine ownership and the chance to shape how a company grows. Equity is on the table for the right person, and the timing could not be better.
The Role
This is a Senior Backend Developer position at the heart of the engineering team, working closely with a small and highly capable group to own backend architecture decisions, build APIs and services that power mobile and IoT products, and help establish the engineering practices that will carry the business through its next stage of growth. You will work with real time communication systems, manage complex integrations with third party APIs, own observability across structured logging, metrics and alerting, and collaborate across AWS infrastructure to understand how everything connects at the networking level. You will also mentor junior developers and play an active role in building a strong engineering culture as the team scales.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, enhance and maintain scalable back end services and APIs
- Lead architectural decisions that support rapid growth and increased user demand
- Work with real time communication systems using WebSockets and socket.io
- Manage Redis for pub/sub, caching and job queuing
- Build and maintain robust integrations with third party APIs including error handling, rate limit management, retries and monitoring
- Own observability across structured logging, metrics and alerting
- Collaborate across AWS infrastructure including RDS, Lambda and IoT Core with a solid understanding of networking including VPCs, subnets, NAT gateways and VPNs
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to a strong engineering culture
- Integrate with third party software to enhance the product offering
What You’ll Need
Essential
- 5 or more years of professional back end development experience
- Strong Node.js and TypeScript skills - this is your primary toolset
- Solid experience with WebSockets and socket.io
- Strong grasp of REST API design covering authentication, error handling and versioning
- Comfortable with Redis across pub/sub, caching and queues
- SQL and relational database experience, ideally with AWS RDS and MySQL
- Experience with message and job queues such as Bee Queue, SQS or similar
- Solid logging and observability practice across structured logs, metrics and alerting
- Proven experience with AWS services and a real understanding of AWS networking
- Comfortable working at pace in a small, high trust team
Nice to Have
- Exposure to IoT systems including firmware interaction, physical device constraints and connectivity debugging
- Experience with real time mobile app communications
- API versioning and backward compatibility experience
- A track record of scaling systems through periods of significant growth
Why Apply?
- Salary £55,000 - £60,000
- Equity available for the right candidate
- Derry based with flexibility on working arrangements
