The Mechanical Assembly Technician plays a critical role in building high-quality mechanical systems and structures that are ready for seamless integration, test, and deployment. You will take engineering intent — drawings, BOMs, and specifications — and turn it into precise, reliable, right-first-time mechanical builds that underpin safe and consistent product delivery.
This role combines:
- Hands-on mechanical assembly (building frames, enclosures, sub-assemblies, and fitted components to defined standards)
- Cross-disciplinary integration (working closely with electrical technicians to ensure clean, serviceable, mechanically sound installations)
- Quality-driven production support (maintaining workmanship standards, identifying issues early, and supporting rework or retrofit activities)
You will ensure that every mechanical build is completed accurately, safely, and consistently — not just assembled, but assembled correctly, with the care and attention that prevents downstream issues and protects delivery performance. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on engineering, takes pride in build quality, and thrives in a production environment where precision, teamwork, and methodical execution matter every day.
What you will be doing
- Assemble mechanical structures and sub-assemblies
- Build frames, enclosures, modules, and mechanical interfaces using engineering drawings, detail views, and BOMs to guide accurate, repeatable assembly
- Fit mechanical components with precision
- Install bearings, shafts, brackets, seals, guards, fasteners, and panels, ensuring correct alignment, torque, and clearances
- Carry out core workshop operations
- Perform drilling, tapping, torquing, alignment, and basic adjustments using hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment safely and correctly
- Support mechanical–electrical integration
- Work closely with electrical technicians to integrate looms, panels, and equipment, ensuring mechanical interfaces are correct and access for service and test is maintained
- Maintain quality, safety, and compliance
- Build to defined workmanship standards, follow EHS procedures, and identify drawing issues, missing parts, or non-conformances early
- Support production and delivery activities
- Assist with rework, retrofit, packaging, preparation, and installation tasks, feeding back issues to Manufacturing Engineering to improve designs and instructions
Who you are
- Experienced in mechanical assembly or fitting. You have hands-on experience building mechanical systems, reading engineering drawings, and working with BOMs and workshop tools
- Detail-driven and quality-focused. You take pride in workmanship, follow processes carefully, and understand the impact of precision on downstream integration and test
- Comfortable in production environments. You can work to schedules, adapt to build priorities, and maintain a clean, organised, safe workspace
- A practical, collaborative team member. You work well with electrical, mechanical, and production colleagues, communicate clearly, and take ownership of your build output
Desirable
- Mechanical qualification or apprenticeship (NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent)
- Experience with low-volume or bespoke builds transitioning into repeatable production
- Exposure to electrical systems or control builds
- Basic fault-finding and rework capability
