Responsibilities
- Prepare and cut steel and metal plates using oxyfuel, plasma cutters, and hand tools
- Clean, strip, degrease, and preheat metals prior to fabrication
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Measure and mark out plate and structural steelwork accurately
- Shape, form, and join metal plates and structural steel
- Assemble components using lifting equipment, tack welding, and fasteners
- Perform welding tasks ensuring strength and durability
- Inspect welds and structures for defects and quality compliance
- Follow health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Report hazards, defects, and non-conforming materials
- Maintain welding and cutting equipment
- Manage tools and ensure proper care and security
- Record fabrication processes, inspections, and material usage
- Complete documentation related to welding and plating tasks
- Collaborate with engineers and team members
- Minimise downtime and material waste to improve efficiency
Qualifications
- Solid understanding of welding equipment and welding accessories
- Proficiency in MIG, TIG, MMA, and FCAW welding techniques
- Ability to use oxyfuel cutting, plasma cutters, and grinding tools
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, welding process specifications, and welding symbols
- Experience operating manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using various processes
- Capability to weld in all positions with quality
- Proficiency with tape measure, pressure gauge, level and square
- Advantageous to operate a Pendant Controlled Overhead Crane
- Advantageous to hold a Forklift Truck licence & IPAF certificate (training can be provided)
- Time-served craftsman background preferred
- Flexible approach to work and location of work, including willingness to travel
- Strong team player, able to work independently and on own initiative
- Good communication skills with colleagues, contractors and clients
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Full UK driving licence
