About the Company
GRS is the country's number one trader of primary, recycled and secondary aggregates in the construction industry. GRS Stone Supplies, a joint venture within the GRS Group, operates three inert landfills and one waste treatment station in the Southwest, with a capacity of over 1.5 million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste per annum.
The Role
The Technical Waste Advisor is responsible for assessing and classifying waste to determine its suitability for our facilities, ensuring full compliance with Waste Acceptance Procedures, environmental permits, legal and regulatory requirements. The role involves reviewing technical data, liaising with customers, and attending site visits to support waste assessments and segregation controls. The Advisor will coordinate on‑site verification testing, ensure timely sampling, and confirm laboratory results meet our Waste Acceptance Criteria. Strong administration, IT (particularly Excel), and analytical skills are essential to ensure enquiries are accurately logged and approved jobs are set up correctly within our systems. Where waste is unsuitable for our facilities, the Advisor will support the sales team in identifying alternative treatment or disposal options.
Key Responsibilities
- In conjunction with the Environmental Compliance Manager, ensure day‑to‑day compliance of waste movements with the region.
- Review ground & site investigation reports, soil reports, basic characterisation and waste classifications to support the acceptance of waste.
- Approve or reject material, seeking opportunities to segregate material where possible.
- Record all waste enquiries on SoilFLO, our waste acceptance and weighbridge system.
- Engage customers sites directly or alongside sales personnel to advise on waste matters, over the phone or on site.
- Co‑ordinate and support the management of our on‑site verification testing procedures, including site testing, coordinating couriers, assessing and recording results, and confirming results meet internal acceptance criteria.
- Escalate any non‑conformance and support corrective measures.
- Liaise with consultants and laboratories to support compliance of business activities.
- Advise on waste classifications and characterisation, potential disposal points or other options that may offer commercial gain.
- Ensure compliance and discharge legal duties regarding HR and Health & Safety to promote a safe, equitable and legally compliant workplace.
Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and Experience Required
- GCSEs in Maths, English and Science (essential); BSc Environmental Science (desirable).
- Knowledge of Duty of Care requirements, waste legislation, WM3 guidance, Landfill Directive and CD&E waste.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex technical information.
- Experience in soil analysis interpretation, WM3 hazardous waste classification, Waste Acceptance Criteria assessment and waste management (essential).
- Desirable experience in environmental permitting, soil sampling and HazWasteOnline.
- Proficient IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
