Lead Radiographer in City of Westminster

The Lead Radiographer will be responsible for the operational and clinical management of the MRI service across the Queen Anne Street site. Working closely with the Centre Manager and senior colleagues, the post holder will ensure efficient use of resources through effective demand and capacity management while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, safety and image quality. As an autonomous practitioner, you will undertake and oversee a broad range of MRI examinations, independently assess and justify referrals, and apply advanced clinical judgement to deliver diagnostic imaging in line with professional, departmental and legal requirements. You will lead, support and develop the radiography team, contribute to training and education, manage day‑to‑day workflow, and play a key role in service development, governance and continuous improvement of the MRI service.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct a wide range of MRI scans on various patient types, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, meeting professional, departmental and legal standards.
• Independently assess and justify referrals following practitioner guidelines where appropriate.
• Interpret clinician requirements to determine the appropriate radiographic scan technique and ensure diagnostic images are produced in accordance with best practice.
• Use discretion to work outside departmental standards when clinical circumstances necessitate, e.g., undertaking additional or specialist techniques.
• Conduct MRI scans in the absence of a radiologist according to agreed protocols.
• Organise day‑to‑day workload through the MRI service, ensuring efficient use of all available resources.
• Act as an autonomous radiographer practitioner, meeting the standards set within the Health Professions Council’s professional code of conduct.
• Identify problems affecting patient throughput and take appropriate measures to resolve them.
• Coordinate with clinicians regarding MRI requests.
• Provide monthly and annual reports detailing service progress.
• Oversee appointments to optimise scanning time utilisation.
• Schedule equipment service dates around workload to minimise disruption.

Person specifications

• BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent DCR.
• HCPC registration.
• Cannulation qualification.
• Significant post‑qualification experience in MRI.
• Experience in a management position in an operational or service management capacity.
• Experience in training and managing students.
• Experience dealing with challenging situations.
• Diverse experience of cross‑sectional imaging.
• Excellent team‑working, organisational and leadership skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage staff effectively.
• Well‑developed analytical skills and innovative problem‑solving abilities.
• Good IT skills.
