BBC Science Focus is looking for a Staff Writer. The role involves producing daily news and feature copy that engages audiences across print, video and online platforms. You will use your editorial instincts and digital tools to identify trends, write clear, concise copy and analyse performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Produce news stories and on‑trend features (typically 2 articles per day).
- File and publish content on the website, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Generate ideas for timely news features and stories linked to current topics.
- Meet achievable content targets in collaboration with the digital editor.
- Contribute to podcast production with the team.
- Write long‑form content as required by the team.
Essential Qualifications
- Driven journalist capable of creating original online content daily.
- Web‑literate and digitally confident, with experience uploading and managing content on websites.
- Strong editorial judgement and journalistic instinct, especially around science storytelling.
- Ability to write succinct, clear and informative copy that simplifies complex topics.
- Confident communicator who works effectively with internal and external teams.
- Tenacity to chase experts and interviewees for exclusive insights.
- Ability to integrate data, imagery and infographics visually into stories.
- Experience writing for magazines and/or websites.
- Self‑starter who builds and grows work streams independently.
- Understanding of SEO principles and cross‑platform optimisation.
