Working Pattern

We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Occam Group, with time split between the office, client sites and working from home; however the successful candidate must be based in the Bristol area.

We would consider full time / part time working pattern.

This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished Maritime Safety professional.

You will play a central role in supporting platform and equipment safety across customer programmes.

As a senior specialist, you will deliver technical assurance, and support clients in maintaining the highest standards of safety,

This high‑impact role is ideal for someone proactive, dependable, commercially aware, and committed to supporting the safe operation of maritime assets.

Duties to include

  • Collaboration with clients, onsite at Mo D Abbey Wood (Bristol) and over Teams.
  • Development and update of safety cases for naval and commercial surface ships and equipment.
  • Identification of Safety Critical Items, and development of associated performance standards and verification schemes, for naval surface ships.
  • Development of guidance and training material that supports implementation of safety methodologies.
  • Proactive, collaborative engagement with stakeholders.
  • Business development activities in support of securing new work.
  • Mentor developing engineers.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Maritime safety practitioner with broad knowledge of ships & submarines.
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) preferably in a related technical discipline.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexibly to meet changing customer needs.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Defence Maritime Regulations, Ships Safety Management O&A leaflets, and DE&S (now National Armaments-Materiel) Maritime Environment ways of working.
  • Experience of developing policy, standards and guidance.
  • Experience of developing Claims, Argument, Evidence based Safety Cases.

Desirable Requirements

  • Chartered status (e. g. IMar EST, IMech E, IET or equivalent).
  • Experience of Safety Critical Elements in a high hazard industry (e. g. oil and gas).
  • Experience of bowtie methodology.
  • Consultancy or technical advisory experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Existing SC security clearance.
