Obsidyan is an independent Quantity Surveying, Contract Services and Dispute Support consultancy based in Andover, Hampshire that provides support to contracting and sub-contracting businesses.

Due to continued growth and an increasing workload, we are looking to recruit a Quantity Surveyor / Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to join our team.

This is a hands‑on commercial role suited to someone with practical UK construction experience who can independently manage routine Quantity Surveying activities while developing their knowledge of more complex commercial, contractual and dispute‑related matters.

You will work closely with senior members of the business across a varied range of projects, clients and forms of contract. The role offers significant exposure to both traditional Quantity Surveying and specialist contract and commercial work, with genuine scope to develop as the business grows.

This is not a remote position. The role is based from our Andover office, so the applicant will need to be able to commute to Andover in Hampshire. The role will involve travel to client offices and construction sites as required. Some home working may be available by agreement.

Duties

  • Being responsible for the commercial aspects of projects or supporting in the commercial management of projects.
  • Administration of head contracts with clients.
  • Notification and valuation of changes as projects proceed.
  • Compilation, substantiation and submission of monthly applications for payment.
  • Supporting claims for extension of time and loss and expense.
  • Procurement and Tendering of Subcontractor packages.
  • Preparing and agreeing Subcontracts.
  • Administering Subcontracts including certifying payment and valuing changes.
  • Measurement and drawings.
  • Compilation of cost forecasts to completion.
  • Supporting financial reporting including compilation of Cost Value Reconciliation Reports.
  • Supporting with formal disputes such as Adjudication.

You should also have:

  • Previous practical Quantity Surveying experience within the UK construction industry.
  • A good understanding of contract administration.
  • Experience of dealing with applications for payment, variations and change management.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commercially minded approach with strong attention to detail.
  • Confidence when dealing with clients, subcontractors and project teams.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
  • A full UK driving licence and regular access to a vehicle for work‑related travel.
  • The right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship from Obsidyan.

A degree in Quantity Surveying, or progress towards an appropriate professional qualification, would be advantageous but is not essential for the right candidate.

Experience of different forms of construction contract and familiarity with contractual claims or dispute resolution would also be advantageous, although specialist experience is not required.
