O’Brien Contractors are a Midlands based Civil Engineering & Building Contractor with an excellent reputation and an enviable client list. As part of our continued expansion we are seeking a SHEQ professional to join our business on a full time basis. The purpose of the role is to lead, manage, and continuously improve the company’s Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) systems across all civil engineering and construction projects. The SHEQ Manager ensures full compliance with UK legislation, industry standards, client requirements, and internal policies while promoting a positive safety culture and driving best practice across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Health & Safety
    • Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s H&S management system.
    • Conduct regular site audits, inspections, and behavioural safety visits.
    • Provide H&S training.
    • Maintain accident statistics, near‑miss reporting, and KPI tracking.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
    • Lead environmental impact assessments and support site teams in pollution control, waste management, and sustainability initiatives.
    • Manage environmental incident reporting and corrective actions.
  • Quality
    • Maintain and improve the company’s Quality Management System (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
    • Conduct internal audits and lead external certification renewals.
    • Promote a proactive safety culture across all levels of the business.
    • Provide SHEQ advice and support across the business.
    • Manage and maintain SHEQ documentation, procedures, and training records.
    • Monitor legislative changes and update internal processes accordingly.
    • Support tender submissions and client meetings by providing SHEQ-related input.
    • Contribute to SHEQ elements of O & M system and handover process to clients.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Valid CSCS affiliated card.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Experience in a SHEQ role within civil engineering or construction.
  • Proven experience conducting audits, investigations, and risk assessments.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to analyse data, identify trends, and implement improvement strategies.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or working towards it.
  • Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH, GradIOSH, or CMIOSH).
