Sue Dalton is the area manager for all the English Heritage sites in South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. English Heritage is a registered charity and is one of the most important guardians of historic sites in England. English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments, and sites spanning over 6,000 years of history.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all English Heritage sites in South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, including Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, Conisbrough Castle, Roche Abbey, Thornton Abbey and Gatehouse, and St Peters Church, Barton-Upon-Humber.
  • Oversee finance records for each site, including daily tracking of income and expenditure budgets, identifying issues, and authorizing spending.
  • Supervise approximately 300 volunteers and over 100 staff during peak seasons, including reporting on sickness, holidays, performance reviews, and recruitment.
  • Meet with teams on-site to address operational issues and ensure a positive visitor experience.
  • Manage communications, including emails related to offers, price changes, new laws, and customer complaints.

Work Environment

Based in an office at Brodsworth Hall, I regularly visit other sites and work one day a week from home. On-site challenges include limited WIFI and mobile phone reception.

My work is varied and includes responsibilities in retail, catering, volunteer management, gardens, building issues, education, filming requests, and local community relations.
