OAL is expanding its engineering team and looking for an experienced Ignition Software Engineer to support the development of a next-generation end-of-line automation platform. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative engineering environment working on innovative automation solutions within the food manufacturing sector. You will play a key role in the development and integration of Ignition-based systems, helping shape the future of OAL's end-of-line technology offering. Working alongside software, controls, and project engineers, you will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of scalable industrial automation solutions used by leading food manufacturers across the UK.

What you will be doing:

  • Ignition software development: Develop and maintain Ignition-based applications within an established engineering structure, following coding standards and team conventions.
  • Industrial systems integration: Support the integration of automation systems, devices, and industrial communication protocols across end-of-line solutions.
  • Automation scripting and logic: Use Python or Jython scripting within Ignition to support automation logic, data handling, and system functionality.
  • Platform architecture and optimisation: Contribute to the ongoing development, improvement, and scalability of the Ignition platform architecture.
  • Collaboration and technical review: Work closely with software engineers, controls engineers, and project teams while participating in peer reviews and continuous improvement activities.
  • Technical problem solving: Assist with troubleshooting, commissioning support, and technical issue resolution across automation projects and product development activities.

What we are looking for:

Essential skills and experience:

  • Hands-on Ignition development experience with the ability to contribute effectively within an established project environment.
  • Strong understanding of the Ignition platform architecture.
  • Experience using Python or Jython scripting within Ignition.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking and communication protocols including OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, UDP, and TCP.
  • Collaborative approach to software development including peer review and coding standards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Advantageous experience:

  • Experience working with source control and continuous integration environments.
  • Working knowledge of Beckhoff (TwinCAT) or Rockwell (Studio 5000).
  • Experience integrating Cognex vision systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial printer communication.
  • Ignition Core Certification or willingness to achieve certification within six months.
