Salary: £70,000 – £85,000 + benefits

An exciting engineering hardware consultancy based in Nottingham is looking for a Firmware Team Lead to take ownership of firmware delivery across multiple client projects.

They work closely with customers to bring real products to life – from early concept through to production, across a wide range of industries. This is a blended role, combining hands-on embedded development with technical leadership, delivery ownership, and line management of firmware engineers.

The Role

As Firmware Team Lead, you will be accountable for all firmware aspects of project delivery, while remaining technically active.

You will:

• Lead firmware delivery across multiple projects, from estimation and technical risk assessment through to implementation and release
• Remain hands-on with embedded firmware development (architecture, complex features, bring-up, reviews, critical path work)
• Own firmware estimates, plans, and work packages, balancing technical quality with commercial reality
• Identify and manage technical risks, dependencies, and assumptions throughout the project lifecycle
• Act as the primary firmware point of contact for customers, communicating progress, trade-offs, and risks clearly
• Ensure firmware solutions are pragmatic, value-driven, and avoid unnecessary complexity
• Work closely with other engineering leads to ensure strong cross-discipline collaboration
• Line manage firmware engineers, including 1-2-1s, performance management, coaching, and team development

Secure & Cyber-Resilient Firmware

Security is a core part of this role. You will help shape secure-by-design firmware solutions, including:

• Secure boot, Root of Trust, and authenticated firmware updates
• Threat modelling and firmware-level security risk assessment
• Supporting projects aligned with cybersecurity regulations such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)

What They’re Looking For

• Proven experience in a hands-on embedded firmware role with technical or team leadership responsibilities
• Strong embedded background (MCUs, RTOS / bare-metal, C/C++)
• Experience owning delivery, estimation, and technical risk
• Experience designing or delivering secure embedded systems
• Comfortable using Jira for planning and tracking
• Confident communicating with customers and senior stakeholders
• Pragmatic, outcome-focused mindset with commercial awareness
