I'm working with a specialist engineering company based in Cheltenham that designs and manufactures electronic systems for demanding customers, including government and defence. They're looking for a Senior Project Engineer to sit alongside the Engineering Director and help run the technical side of the business day to day. This isn't a pure design role. You'll do plenty of hands-on electronic design work, but you'll also be trusted to lead project reviews, mentor a small engineering team, and take the pressure off the Engineering Director by fielding technical questions and decisions yourself. When the Director isn't around, you're the one steering the ship.

What you'll be doing:

  • Electronic design work across current projects, using the tools and methods that fit each job
  • Running project reviews with the team, catching issues early and keeping projects on track
  • Mentoring engineers and answering their day-to-day questions
  • Making sure the team follows the QMS properly, and improving it where it needs improving
  • Helping shape responses to RFQs and ITTs alongside the Director
  • Keeping on top of project spend and tracking it properly
  • Stepping in to manage engineering activity when the Director is out

What they're looking for:

  • Solid experience in electronic design and the tools that go with it
  • Someone quick on their feet who can adapt when priorities shift
  • A strong communicator, comfortable presenting design work to management and occasionally customers
  • Natural leadership ability, someone the team will go to for guidance
  • A degree or HND (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline is a big plus, especially with exposure to communications and mechanical design
  • Experience in military or government-related programmes is desirable but not a dealbreaker
  • Full UK driving licence preferred, as there's occasional UK and international travel
