Walker & Sloan are proud to be exclusively representing Oakland Construction in the appointment of an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. Having worked closely with Oakland for the past couple of years, we’ve seen the business go from strength to strength. We know the team, we’ve seen their ambition, and we’re excited about what this next chapter offers someone looking to develop their career.

Led by Managing Director Tom Lee-Fox, Oakland has built a fantastic team with a clear appetite for growth. The business is expanding, strengthening its team and investing in the people who will help shape its next few years. For an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, that makes this an exciting time to join: an opportunity to establish yourself within the commercial team as the wider business moves forward.

There’s a strong social side to life at Oakland, too. They’re proud of their work hard, play hard mentality, bringing people together through charity cricket days, team meals at Pasture and larger company celebrations. They take their work seriously and make time to celebrate success together. Having spent time getting to know the business, that team spirit is one of the things that stands out to us.

The Opportunity

You’ll report directly to Commercial Manager Lee Concannon, an experienced commercial professional whose knowledge will be a valuable resource as you develop. For someone early in their career, that relationship matters. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, understand the reasoning behind commercial decisions and build the judgement that comes with practical experience.

The role will involve supporting the commercial team across key areas of project delivery, with responsibilities expected to include:

  • Assisting with subcontractor enquiries, tender comparisons and procurement
  • Supporting valuations, applications for payment and subcontractor payments
  • Measuring works and preparing quantities
  • Helping identify, record and assess variations
  • Assisting with cost reporting, forecasting and budget management
  • Working closely with site teams to understand progress and commercial priorities
  • Supporting final accounts and maintaining accurate commercial records

As your experience and confidence develop, the aim is to build your ability to take on greater commercial responsibility.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Good Excel skills and an organised approach to your work
  • The confidence to communicate with colleagues, subcontractors and site teams
