Oakham School, a dynamic co-educational boarding and day school, is seeking an exceptional Head of Instrumental Studies to join our large and vibrant Music Department. This is a rare opportunity to shape the instrumental provision of a school with a rich musical culture, working alongside passionate colleagues and talented pupils across the full ability range.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Music, you will take the lead on all aspects of instrumental studies — from line-managing our team of Visiting Music Teachers to directing Concert Band and Big Band, curating our weekly Lunchtime Concert series and overseeing the logistics of concerts, events and external examinations. You'll be a visible champion for instrumental music across the school, inspiring pupils to take up, continue and excel in their musical journey.

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll be a skilled performer — ideally a woodwind or brass player — with a track record of excellent instrumental teaching and strong ensemble direction. You’ll bring energy, warmth and first-class organisational skills, along with the communication skills to build great relationships with pupils, parents, staff and external partners. Experience of teaching in a school setting and managing staff would be a real advantage, as would a degree from a university or conservatoire and QTS/PGCE.

What We Offer

A vibrant, ambitious Music Department where excellence and enjoyment go hand in hand. You will join a dedicated, collaborative team, with opportunities to lead high-quality tours, work with respected partners such as the Nevill Holt Festival and contribute to musical experiences that make a lasting impact on our pupils.

If you’re ready to lead, inspire and perform, we’d love to hear from you.
