NXG is an established independent provider of NHS-commissioned and local-authority-commissioned services for children, young people, and communities across England.
Our clinical portfolio spans community mental health and wellbeing services, all-age crisis support, health and justice settings, and SEND and alternative provision.
We are appointing a Clinical NED to strengthen Board-level clinical leadership as the organisation scales.
Primary Purpose
To provide independent clinical leadership, constructive challenge, and assurance to the Board on all matters of clinical quality, safety, and governance.
The Clinical NED will hold executive delivery to account on clinical standards, ensure concerns raised by frontline staff are heard and acted upon through robust governance routes, and act as the Board's senior clinical voice across current delivery and future service development.

Governance: Serve as an active member of the Board; provide clinical insight into strategy, risk appetite, service development, and bid/no-bid decisions on clinically-led opportunities; chair or contribute to the Quality & Clinical Governance Committee.
- Clinical Governance & Operational
Accountability: Oversee the clinical governance framework, including incident review, safeguarding assurance, escalation of staff-raised clinical concerns, and Freedom to Speak Up culture; lead or commission periodic clinical reviews and quality audits across service lines, reporting findings and required actions to the Board with clear accountability.
- Workforce Support & CPD: Deliver and shape CPD for clinical and delivery staff; provide supervision-adjacent mentorship to senior clinical leads; support recruitment, appraisal, and revalidation-aligned development of the clinical workforce.
Person Specification
- Active UK clinical registration in good standing (GMC, NMC, HCPC, or equivalent) with a senior clinical background — e. g.
Consultant Psychiatrist, GP, Consultant Nurse, or Allied Health Executive with CAMHS/CYP mental health experience strongly preferred.
- Substantial experience of clinical governance at Board or executive level within the NHS or a regulated independent provider; sound working knowledge of CQC expectations, NHS contracting standards, safeguarding (KCSIE/Working Together), and clinical audit methodology.
- Demonstrable experience of handling and resolving clinical concerns raised by staff, with the judgement to distinguish operational noise from genuine quality and safety risk.
- Credible, independent, and values-driven; able to challenge constructively, communicate with commissioners and regulators, and mentor a multidisciplinary workforce.
- Remuneration & Time Commitment
A competitive day rate, commensurate with seniority and clinical registration, will be discussed with shortlisted candidates at screening.
The role is engaged on a contract-for-services basis with an expected commitment of 12–18 days per annum, comprising quarterly Board meetings, scheduled clinical review and audit assignments, CPD delivery, and ad-hoc availability for clinical escalations.
The appointment is subject to enhanced DBS clearance, safer recruitment checks, and satisfactory references.
