We are looking for a Facilities Manager who will be responsible for the management and upkeep of the organisation’s physical R&D facilities in Cambridge. This includes overseeing building maintenance, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, managing vendor relationships, and optimising the usage of physical resources. The role requires strong organisational, technical, and problem-solving skills to ensure that the workplace environment is safe, efficient, and conducive to employee productivity.

Responsibilities:
  • Facility Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, and general facilities infrastructure. Schedule and supervise preventive maintenance programs. Ensure that all facilities and equipment are functioning properly and safely.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with regulations concerning building safety, fire codes, health standards, and environmental concerns. Work with the H&S Manager to conduct regular safety audits and inspections. Prepare for emergency situations, such as fires, power outages, and evacuations.
  • Vendor and Contractor Management: Manage relationships with external contractors and vendors for services such as cleaning, landscaping, security, and repairs. Work with Procurement to ensure contracts are effectively negotiated, performance is evaluated, and services are delivered as agreed. Monitor and control expenditures related to facilities management.
  • Space Management: Plan and organise space utilisation within the facility. Ensure the organisation’s work environment is conducive to employee well-being and productivity. Oversee moves, additions, and changes in the layout of the workspace.
  • Budget and Cost Control: Develop and manage the facilities management budget. Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising service quality or safety. Review and approve invoices for facility-related expenses.
  • Lab Support: Lead a team of Lab Support Technicians responsible for supporting the labs with purchasing and stocking lab consumables, servicing equipment and any other lab tech related tasks.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives: Work with the Sustainability Committee to implement sustainability initiatives and environmental programmes to reduce energy consumption, waste, and carbon footprint. Identify opportunities for green building certifications and sustainability programmes.
  • Crisis and Emergency Management: Develop and implement contingency plans for crises, natural disasters, or unexpected facility issues. Coordinate emergency preparedness training and drills for all staff.
  • Communication and Reporting: Maintain clear communication with management regarding facility-related issues, improvements, and needs. Prepare regular reports on facility performance, maintenance activities, and budgets.
Experience & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in facilities management, business administration, engineering, or related field (preferred).
  • Demonstrable experience in facilities management in biotech/pharmaceutical industry with particular lab expertise.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, including electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance. Demonstrable experience with servicing lab equipment (CL II hoods, centrifuges, incubators and other non-specialist equipment, run the pipette clinic).
  • Hands on experience with refurb or build of labs & offices.
  • Experience with vendor management, budgeting, and contract negotiation.
  • Experience with Controlled Drugs, HTA, RPS, BSO, H&S, GMO licenses.
  • Ability to lead and manage teams effectively.
  • Strong organisational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in facilities management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
