If you enjoy responsibility, working outdoors, being part of a team that makes a real impact, and taking pride in doing things to a high standard, this could be the perfect role for you.
As a Project Technician, youll be responsible for planning and organising different wastewater sampling related projects in accordance with key stakeholder and laboratory department requirements. Specifically, youll be responsible for organising, monitoring and maintaining some of our core NWG sampling programmes, including Trade Effluent sampling and a number of upcoming large-scale capital projects in AMP8. Youll often be the key contact, particularly if site visits are required, to investigate and resolve any sampling related issues that arise. You will also be responsible for monitoring and maintaining accredited quality systems and equipment calibration schedules, and the sampling software packages used by the team.
You will assist our team of Sampler Technicians collecting wastewater and effluent samples from a wide range of locations across the whole North East region. This includes sewage treatment works, rivers, industrial customer sites and bathing waters, amongst others, in accordance with annual sampling schedules and strict, accredited methodologies to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Youll provide unsupervised on-site sampling and laboratory analysis for other NWG teams where effluent treatment processes rely on accurate data and timely support.
This is a hands on, physical role that involves working in all weather conditions and handling specialist sampling equipment, as well as office based duties where youll be highly organised and use your initiative to meet deadlines, solve problems, and be competent in Microsoft applications to produce accurate reports and documentation.
Youll be part of a regional 24/7 operation, so weekend and standby rota participation is expected to help ensure continuous coverage throughout the year.
At Northumbrian Water, health and safety is at the heart of everything we do. We operate with a strong Everyone Home Safe Every Day culture and provide all the training, procedures, and support you need to work safely and effectively, and be a leading example of this culture to the team.

Youll need to hold a full UK driving licence and have the ability to follow, and maintain, strict sampling and documentation procedures in line with our ISO17025 and MCERTS accreditation standards. This role suits someone who is self-motivated and confident working independently, but also values being part of a supportive team. You will be competent in Microsoft applications: Sharepoint, Excel, Word and Outlook, and preferably have some knowledge of Sample Manager. Youll have good written and verbal communication skills and be able, and willing, to train and develop on-the-job and through collaboration with colleagues.
Flexibility is key as the workload can vary, youll need to be able to adapt quickly to different tasks, both operational and sampling related. Resilience and a willingness to adjust to changing priorities are essential in a role thats both dynamic and rewarding.
Your base will be in Washington but your operational duties will see you regularly travelling across the Northumbrian Water region.
