Southampton, customer sites & some home working | Permanent | Competitive salary + benefits
Are you technically minded, good with people and someone who enjoys solving practical problems? We are very open on background. You could come from field service, electronics, installation, maintenance, manufacturing, automotive, marine, defence or a technical role in the Armed Forces.
If you have practical technical experience and want to apply it in a new sector, this could be a great next step. I am supporting a growing Southampton-based technology business looking for a Field Service Engineer. A practical technical foundation is important, but communication, teamwork, adaptability and the ability to learn matter more than experience with a particular product or industry. Training on the company’s technology will be provided. Previous experience in water quality monitoring or sensor systems isn’t required.
The person we’re looking for:
- Problem-solving: you think on your feet, work through problems logically and know when to ask for support.
- Communication: you listen, explain things clearly and keep customers and colleagues informed.
- Teamwork: you’re happy to help others, share knowledge and contribute to the wider team.
- Adaptability: you enjoy variety and are willing to get involved where needed within a small, growing company.
- Willingness to learn: you’re curious about how things work and keen to develop new technical skills.
- Reliability: you organise your work, take responsibility and follow through on commitments.
A range of backgrounds could fit:
- Field service and installation: installing, maintaining or repairing equipment at customer sites.
- Electronics and electrical engineering: testing, fault-finding, repairs or deploying electronic systems.
- Mechanical and manufacturing maintenance: maintaining machinery, production equipment or automated systems.
- Scientific, laboratory and medical equipment: servicing instruments, diagnostic equipment or fluid-handling systems.
- Industrial instrumentation and controls: sensors, calibration, automation, telemetry or monitoring equipment.
- Marine and offshore engineering: vessel electronics, navigation systems or equipment maintenance.
- Automotive, commercial vehicle or plant maintenance: diagnosing faults and repairing electrical and mechanical systems.
- Telecoms and building systems: communications equipment, security systems, fire alarms or building controls.
- Utilities and environmental services: water treatment, pumps, dosing systems, energy or monitoring equipment.
- Defence and Armed Forces: practical technical roles involving electronics, communications, electrical or mechanical maintenance.
Your job title doesn’t need to be Field Engineer. Technicians, service engineers, maintenance engineers and technical service leavers are all encouraged to get in touch.
The role:
The business develops specialist sensor systems for water quality and environmental monitoring. With training and support, you’ll install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair this equipment at customer sites. You’ll work closely with customers and the internal technical team, combining hands-on engineering with relationship building and practical problem-solving.
Location and travel:
You’ll split your time between the Southampton base, customer sites and some home working, depending on the work required.
- UK site visits: typically 1-3 days per week.
- International travel: typically no more than once per month, usually with around at least one week’s notice.
- Overnight stays: approximately twice per month.
Travel expectations are discussed upfront and reviewed regularly, with individual needs considered where possible.
Why join?
You’ll join a supportive team with no staff turnover in the past three years, leadership that listens, and the opportunity to learn specialist technology. The package includes competitive pay, a pension and flexibility where the role allows. You don’t need to tick every technical box. If you bring practical ability, strong people skills and a willingness to learn, I’d be pleased to hear from you.
