Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer
Join NUVIA as a Senior or Principal Mechanical Engineer. The role supports current operations and future programmes across multi‑disciplinary nuclear facilities.
Overview
The mechanical engineering team includes Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Building Services, Electrical and Piping Engineers responsible for design substantiation, compliance with safety and regulatory requirements in a high risk environment.
Responsibilities
- Author, develop, assess, maintain and manage Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
- Author, develop, assess, maintain and manage design changes or concessions.
- Produce and develop Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
- Produce or assess Periodic Review of Safety reports.
- Provide advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
- Produce Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) or Independent Peer Review (IPR) scopes of work.
- Apply general and specialist engineering knowledge to emerging technology.
- Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and recycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
- Produce robust technical justification for mechanical design modifications authorised in a high hazard industry.
- Review technical reports and safety case submissions from external contractors.
- Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other staff.
Essential Qualifications
- Relevant engineering qualification.
- Experienced Mechanical Engineer with knowledge of industrial plant and machinery (pumps, generators, etc.).
- Knowledge of current design standards and working practices including British & European Standards.
- Theoretical and practical skill across concept, detailed design and construction stages across a range of electrical engineering projects, ideally including industrial and/or maritime.
- Experience in the design assessment of electrical plant and equipment to withstand hazards.
- Experience authoring and producing robust technical justification and supporting documentation for high hazard industry design modifications.
- Experience working on multi‑discipline projects providing engineering input.
Desirable Qualifications
- Chartered or working towards.
- Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g. HAZID/HAZOP studies.
- Experience working in the UK nuclear industry, particularly in design and assessment of safety‑related structures, systems and components.
- Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear‑specific codes and standards.
