The Systems Engineer (Digital) is accountable to the JDR Digital Capability Project Manager for the provision of industry knowledge and experience, and best practices in systems engineering and related technologies. The role of the Systems Engineer (Digital) is to provide professional Systems Engineering services across the JDR Programme and in collaboration with Systems Engineering Teams across UKAEA. This role focuses on systems engineering for the Digital Capability Project within the JDR Programme and will provide hands-on systems engineering leadership and support to the digital, data and software elements of the JDR Programme and projects at all lifecycle stages, from establishing the initial outline requirements, through the design and implementation phases, to the verification that the final delivered solution meets the original design intent. The scope of these projects will span from long term development of new facilities to short term intensive upgrade, repair and replacement of existing systems. They will be concerned with the development and management of the design and realisation of complex systems and must be able to demonstrate an ability to deal with ambiguity and the application of systems engineering to emergent technologies.

- Keep abreast of developments, innovation and best practice in systems engineering.
- Provide training, coaching and mentoring.
- Support the continuous improvement of systems engineering processes and toolsets.
- Lead and manage the technical development of a system throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure the delivery of assured products and services.
- Research, elicit, capture, develop and manage requirements.
- Define and manage verification and validation activities.
- Define and manage interfaces.
- Develop and maintain the functional and physical architectures / definitions of systems.
- Implement Model Based Systems Engineering techniques where appropriate.
- Conduct trade-off analysis and optioneering studies.
- Conduct analysis activities to improve system performance and safety.
- Provide input and guidance to decision-making activities.
- Support procurement activities.
- Identify, manage and mitigate technical risk.
- Produce technical reports and provide analysis and evidence to support and supplement all activities.
- Role may be requested to provide advice and guidance to other UKAEA project teams if required.
Essential
- A relevant degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- Knowledge and experience of Systems Engineering.
- Demonstrable ability to grasp the basics of an engineering concept and explore wider implications.
- Previous experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams, developing complex systems.
- Extensive experience of practical application of systems engineering.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Working towards professional registration as Chartered Engineer.
- Membership of, or accreditation with, INCOSE would be beneficial at all levels.
- Demonstrable experience of systems engineering in complex digital/software engineering projects.
Desirable
- Professional registration as Chartered Engineer.
- Systems engineering experience in large programmes/projects in complex environments such as nuclear, process or industrial engineering.
- Experience of working closely with software developers/development teams.
- Knowledge of/experience with software development tools and processes.
