Main Purpose Of Job
- Define and distribute the scope of work to ensure that all work is executed safely, on time and at appropriate levels of quality.
- Deliver all design and engineering to meet the requirements of Design Reviews and HAZOPs within project procedures.
- Supervise less experienced engineering employees, manage engineering resources and conduct interviews.
Position In Organisation
- Report to Principal Engineers; ultimate line management responsibilities with the Chief Engineer.
- Normally supervise a design or project team of up to 5 engineering staff, with possible supplementation.
- Responsible for work allocation and managing quality, progress and cost within the project.
- Manage project subcontracts.
- Regularly interact with clients and managers of other engineering disciplines.
- Communicate the project allocation within the team.
Key Accountabilities
- Design, specification, procurement, supply/manufacture liaison, installation, acceptance testing, commissioning and operator training in nuclear engineering projects.
- Liaison with multiple disciplines.
- Technical consultancy.
- Project management including quality, progress and cost control and documentation.
- Sales support and customer care.
- Manage contractors and sub‑contractors; develop staff.
- Maintain safety culture, comply with safety regulations (e.g., CDM, CE marking) and safety systems.
Experience And Attributes Required
- Essential for an EC&I Engineer.
- Degree qualified in a relevant technical/engineering discipline or demonstrable experience.
- A full UK driver’s licence.
- Working toward Chartered Engineer status where applicable.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in the nuclear industry.
- Demonstrable competence in a design/delivery position within a project‑based environment.
- Understanding of design requirements to support nuclear safety cases.
- Significant experience in two or more of the following specific EC&I areas:
- Mechanical handling (including remote in‑cell handling).
- Process instrumentation.
- Functional safety (to BS EN 61508/BS EN 61511).
- Machinery safety (including BS EN 60204 and BS EN 13849).
- LV distribution systems (including Trimble Pro‑design).
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer or candidates nearing chartership; membership to appropriate institutions preferred (e.g., IET).
- EC&I design integration with control systems (PLC/SCADA) advantageous.
- Experience of design substantiation to support safety cases, including assessment of new and existing systems.
- Additional experience within the defence sector advantageous.
- Experience with bid preparation.
