Role Overview
The Maintenance Operative is responsible for day‑to‑day repairs, planned maintenance tasks and ensuring our nurseries remain safe, functional, and well‑presented. This mobile role involves travelling between nurseries and head office, responding to urgent issues, and supporting managers with practical maintenance solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Reactive Repairs
- Complete day‑to‑day repairs across multiple nurseries (carpentry, basic plumbing, minor electrical, painting).
- Respond quickly to urgent maintenance issues affecting safety or nursery operations.
- Diagnose problems and provide practical, cost‑effective solutions.
- Planned Maintenance
- Fire alarm/door checks
- Emergency lighting checks
- Playground and equipment checks
- Legionella temperature checks (if trained)
- Safety & Compliance
- Carry out regular site checks and remedial tasks.
- Ensure that all repairs meet health & safety standards.
- Identify and report any risks, hazards, or compliance issues.
- Site Presentation & Upkeep
- Maintain high standards of presentation across indoor and outdoor areas.
- Complete painting, decorating, and basic refurb tasks as needed.
- Assist with minor furniture assembly, fixture fitting, and outdoor equipment upkeep.
- Contractor Support
- Liaise with external contractors when specialist work is required.
- Assist in preparing nursery areas for contractor visits or refurbishment work.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience as a handyman or similar role.
- Strong knowledge of general maintenance and repair tasks.
- Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC systems.
- Ability to use hand and power tools effectively and safely.
- Willingness to travel to various job sites across the North (from Yorkshire down to Staffordshire).
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport.
- Must have own tools.
- Availability for occasional evening or weekend work as needed.
