About the Team

The clinical advice team is a small team of nurses and midwives working within Professional Regulation. Clinical advice can, in many cases, be very useful in helping us make fair, well-informed decisions. Clinical advice is aimed at assisting the decision-maker to understand the nature of the concern raised. The clinical advisor may suggest preliminary enquiries, either with the person raising the concern or others, for example employers.

Your role and impact

You don’t have to have experience of fitness to practise to join our team; we welcome professionals with all types of backgrounds and experiences. We are looking for people on our register, who have senior leadership experience in clinical practice who will be an asset to the clinical advice team, and the service it provides. We would welcome applications from Midwives with significant and recent experience in acute midwifery settings.

We are looking to recruit clinical advisers to work in our Professional Regulation Directorate, supporting our assessment and consideration of fitness to practise cases. You will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive, best practice advice on clinical, management and leadership matters subject to fitness to practise consideration to aid understanding of the concern raised.
  • Informing assessment of the seriousness of the concern raised with reference to evidence-based practice, and suggest areas where the person raising the concern should be asked to provide further clarification.
  • Delivering education and training to colleagues to enhance understanding of the work of nursing and midwifery professionals; NHS structures; policies and procedures that govern practice for those on our register.

Why choose this role?

These roles are vital to our work in the directorate, bringing necessary clinical and management/leadership insight to our assessment of fitness to practise cases. The role will give you the chance to use your valuable experience in a regulatory setting, where public protection and the maintenance of standards is central to the work that we do. You may be thinking of other ways to use your skills and experience and this role is a great opportunity to do just that.

What you’ll bring

You will be an experienced Midwife with a commitment to clinical excellence and demonstrable experience within your professional setting. With substantial, recent post registration senior experience, you will have a proven record and passion for delivering safe, quality care to patients. It will be a condition of employment that you maintain your NMC registration.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold current NMC registration.
  • Hold a current RM qualification.
  • Experience of managing clinical and managerial investigations.
  • Be enthusiastic and motivated, with the flexibility to adapt to the challenges of a fast-paced environment.
  • Be an independent thinker, with excellent interpersonal skills, which inspire confidence in you.
  • Be a confident and clear communicator, able to influence colleagues.
  • Be able to understand and analyse complex and voluminous material to identify the key issues and present these clearly and concisely, with reference to the NMC Code.
