Lead propagation, inspire growing excellence and help shape one of the UK’s most remarkable gardens.
You will play a central role in the success of our Nursery operations, driving high-quality propagation and plant production across the estate. Working closely with the Head of Nursery, you will ensure clear communication, effective planning and timely reporting across all growing activities, while supporting garden teams with seasonal displays and specialist projects. Acting as the most senior team member in the Head of Nursery’s absence, you will combine hands-on horticultural expertise with confident leadership and a passion for engaging visitors through tours, workshops and demonstrations that bring The Newt’s vision to life.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver high-quality propagation and plant production for the estate.
- Maintain clear, consistent communication and reporting to the Head of Nursery.
- Monitor plant health proactively and implement effective IPM strategies.
- Support the development and delivery of annual propagation and production plans.
- Maintain and enhance decorative display beds around the Nursery.
- Produce plants for seasonal displays, events and specialist projects.
- Work collaboratively across Nursery, Gardens, Turf and Woodlands teams.
- Deliver engaging tours, workshops and demonstrations for visitors.

The Gardens Team (Gardens, Edibles, Nursery, Turf & Woodlands) are dedicated to understanding, developing, curating, protecting, and managing The Newt’s living collection of plants, in an environment where visitors are encouraged to experience and learn about plants, garden history, habitats and to enjoy the gardens. The team run several events and workshops for our visitors over the year which include the popular daily garden tours.
The Nursery department is responsible for the production of plants for all areas across the estate most notably the Ornamental and Edible Gardens but also other areas as required. Holding a tunnel of tropical and sub-tropical house plants that are maintained to a high standard and a collection of succulents which are all used in indoor displays and events across the estate. The Nursery is also heavily involved in shows, events and special projects that the estate undertakes.
