Back-End Engineer (Go) - Connected Sports Tech | Reading, hybrid (1 day/week)

This sports-tech scale-up is changing how a global sport is played. It combines camera-based hardware with an app that tracks play automatically and powers online matches, live stats and training. The platform has passed 200,000 users, up from tens of thousands a year ago, and is aiming for the low millions.

The business sits within a heritage sports brand that was recently acquired by a leading private equity firm and is now in a new phase of growth. The engineering team is around 15 people and works like a startup, with the backing of a much bigger business.

The role

Every match played and every stat collected goes through the back end. You'll build and maintain the Go services and databases behind the core product. You'll sit in a cross-functional team that works closely with the hardware engineers, and you'll help shape the back-end architecture as the product scales.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain REST services in Go
  • Design and evolve the SQL data model behind them
  • Refine user stories with product and integrate APIs with the front-end engineers
  • Write automated tests, then build and deploy to production
  • Monitor performance and quality in production alongside ops
  • Share knowledge through code reviews and pair programming

What you'll bring

  • 4+ years' commercial experience in Go, or a similar language such as Kotlin or Rust
  • Back-end experience on a high-volume, consumer-facing product
  • Experience designing and implementing REST APIs
  • Strong SQL and PostgreSQL
  • Automated testing and CI/CD experience
  • Comfort with startup pace: priorities that shift, freedom to shape the work and a "figure it out" attitude

Nice to have: Kubernetes, Grafana/Loki observability, Swift or Kotlin for mobile, an understanding of modern front-end development, and a background in sport or gaming.

A chance to work at the cutting edge of technology in sport, on a product its users love

Lots of autonomy, and you'll learn from an experienced CTO, CPO and technology investors

Up to 20% bonus, a pension (3% employer contribution), private healthcare and a cycle-to-work scheme, with salary sacrifice for EVs coming soon

Office travel is expensed, you spec your own dev machine, and you get access to 60+ co-working spaces nationwide
